Official 1980's Weekender/Sundancer 300 thread

Thanks....it makes me feel better to see those numbers on yours.

Other than my flush unit saga that I posted in the other thread, haven't done a whole lot to the boat recently. However, I did finally get the windshield shade piece made. Here's a couple pics

I sort of like that idea. Mine gets super hot under the navy blue canvas. A couple of years ago I had some screen sections made up to put in place of the side curtains in the real hot weather.
I need to use them to avoid mildew on the underside of the canvas.
My windshield faces south at my dock, and covering it might cut down the heat quite a bit.
What did it run you?

Thanks. $225. It makes a very big difference in the cabin temperature because you don't have the sun beating on to the dash radiating that heat into the cabin.

Did you put some kinda fan under all that just to keep air moving around? It looks nice. All I've done is sit for the last two weeks...I should be back on the river next week

Yes. I have a fan in the cockpit that runs 24hrs a day and my air is on 24hrs a day in the cabin so air is always moving. Hope you're on the water soon!!

Risers and manifolds came in today and I'm replacing the impellers, they are due in on Monday. I should be underway again by Friday, which is good. Caitlin leaves here in two weeks for school. I'm gonna need time with her on the river before she has to go

Having screens in place of the plastic in the side curtains (Triangle above the side windows) made a huge difference in the mildew problem on the underside of the canvas. I no longer have to run a fan under there in hot weather, and I get zero mildew with the screens in. The natural breeze keeps the air moving enough. The only downside is that if we get a driving rain in a certain direction, the deck will get a little wet. Minor annoyance, and well worth the benefit I get.
I don't like to leave the boat plugged in at the dock when I'm not there, so the screens were a must for me.
I think the covers over the windshield might be my next canvas project. I usually keep the deck hatches covered all the time, and that really keeps the cabin cool. Covering the windshield can only make it better.

That windshield cover will also be good to help prevent water intrusion. The windshield mounts offer plenty of opportunity with all the holes; now you've got some protection.

I have a hatch rebed update. Today I got back to that project and did a few more steps. First, I peeled back the headliner from the hatch cutout. I did this because I wanted to seal the cutout to protect the core for good. But first I had to get rid of the grey paint that Sea Ray thought would be adequate and also to remove the glue used to adhere the headliner. I used a Dremel tool with a drum sander and a depth guide to do it. If you use this method, I would suggest only about 20,000 RPM max and it will be plenty. At top speed that drum sander was cutting through the laminate like it was soft butter. You can see in one of the new pictures the freshly exposed balsa core. Luckily it was in perfect condition and there was no sign anywhere of water intrusion. This alone makes the job worth it in terms of peace of mind. Now I won't wince when well-fed guests stand on the bow deck. Lastly, I countersunk the screw holes. Tomorrow I will epoxy the core shut for good and use Butyl tape sent to me from the guy in Maine who has the excellent "how to" site.

Hello...I was looking for more information and the photos from your hatch rebed project. Looks like the link to the photos is not working. Can you please send to me? Also, did you replace your front large hatch? My has a broken hinge. Thanks in advance.

Seahorse update.....she's back on the water again! But just for a few days, new belts and starboard impeller later this week. I will post a photo of the old ones when they are said and done. Port one was not pretty and the belts weren't long for this world. Classic guys, what else might I have missed?

Sure, what questions did you have? I have pictures somewhere; if you want to pm with your email I will look for them. All in all it's pretty straightforward. I would highly recommend bedding with butyl tape. Make sure to do whatever it takes to get rid of all the sealant on the deck. Sea Ray didn't seal the core from the cut out in any proper way. Luckily mine was bone dry and solid. For good measure I sealed it up with epoxy.

I recently acquired a cockpit table with post and mount and im trying to figure out where im goin to mount it. does anyone have one already or have any help suggesting a location? I have a helm seat that is one sided and a full bench seat across the transom. any help making a decision is appreciated. pics will help too!

Here's where I put mine...

It is on the starboard edge of the aft forward hatch.

There are pics of mine in the link. Plus I installed another mount last weekend off to the side. I will take pics of that soon.

I recently had to replace the fuel pick up in my port-side tank. Unfortunately, the access was inhibited by the cockpit deck directly above it. In other words, there was no clear opening above it from what a deck hatch would have provided. I though of various ways to get it out, but I consulted a mechanic for more ideas. He thought it wasn't worth the risk to the tank and the threads by bending the tube. The best way was to drill a 1.5" hole in the deck. Naturally, I was not crazy about putting a hole in the deck, but I thought it was preferable to the risk of damaging the tank, and having to replace it (and having to pull the motor to do so). That left the question of what to do with the hole. The fiberglass man said he could fix it, but the cost would be several hundred dollars. The mechanic suggested installing a dummy hatch-pull to cover it. That would have worked, but it wouldn't have any functional capability. I thought about it more and decided that I could put another base for the cockpit table in the deck. This would allow me to move the table from the aft cockpit to the side at will. It could be out of the way when needed or provide a side table for drinks and snacks when entertaining. Here is the result. It turned out the table fit perfectly. I included a picture of the plug from the hole. You can see how thick the deck is with both sides of the laminate and the coring. I was happy to see the coring was as dry and perfect as the day it left the factory. Not a hint of water intrusion was found. You can see the original hole from the mechanic inside the larger hole that was necessary for the table base.

Looks like one of my next projects is replacement of the AC Pump. Noticed today that it is leaking from somewhere on the housing.
Before I go crazy trying to read numbers, does anyone know what brand and model I would need, and where to get the best price? My looks to be original Sea Ray installation from 1987.

ive talked to a couple people with older sea rays that raised their swim platforms. makes a huge difference. does anyone with this era weekender have any feedback or experience with this idea??

Does anyone have a 1980 Searay SVR 270?
I need to find out how I can get my steering to work better.
I have Twin 470 Mercruisers with Hydralic Steering

Go to West marine and get a larger pump like I did . I would have to check my pump for GPH numbers but for a little more draw you can pull more water and increase the efficiency of your a/c system.

Wifey happy now! Forward birth cool now when it's 110 outside on Lake Mead !
