Official 1980's Weekender/Sundancer 300 thread

I have this in the Classified area as well with a WTB but thought I'd post here as well for any feed back and emotional support.

Have the boat out for a bottom job and got a call that the port strut and shaft were bent. They were pulled for inspection. The shaft,"
It is in real bad shape and needs to be replaced" and "your strut has electrolysis and is very dangerous and needs to be replaced".

I have a quote from the boat yard, for t
he shaft and coupling $560.00 and a manufactured new strut in stainless steel for $790.00.

Eddie

any photos, have you seen the damaged strut and shaft? Did you have any vibrations?

No pictures. They were going to try and straighten the strut. I saw it before they pulled it and it did have a little bow to it, thought it could be straightened. Just got the word this afternoon. The boat yard sent them off site. Yea had vibrations. Not sure what the process is at this point except either tell the BY to proceed or I get the parts and supply them to the BY. Will probably know more tomorrow. Just pisses me the *&^%$#$^% off.
Purchased the "turn key", "you're stealing this" boat around the end of Sept. and after replacing both non-existent impellers, thermostats and a burned thru exhaust tube and now this. My faith in honest people has waned. I will say the price was fairly low 9K and I figured there would be some repairs pop up just thought I would get some use out of it before.

and they want to ban assault rifles.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil
for I have an M1A !

I would think a quick chat with your legal representation would be in order. If the previous owner did indeed market the boat as "turn key" and ready to use, you may have some recourse there.

The quote for the shaft and coupling is with in a few bucks of my cost. I have a 30 weeknder and did the port 2 years ago. I don't think I would go the stainless route because it won't bend. If you had a stainless on it could have torn into the hull, resulting in hull damage. Shop for used or new one in the brass/bronze. You might also consider installing dripless seals at this time if you don't already have them. Good luck Frenchie

Hey, thanks everyone for your time. Frenchie, I agree with you on the SS strut. I had visions of hitting something and it ripping itself, prop and shaft out in "one swelled fwoop" and everything sitting on the bottom with the strut in one undamaged piece. Thanks for the price check on the shaft and coupling. Flounder Pounder shows a bronze strut for about $300 less than the quoted SS one.

268 Frakenboat, I kinda got dazzled by the 250 hour motors, new vinyl throughout, a boat ride and a 9k price tag. Hell, every boat I looked at was a "turn key" even with a bad AC compresser "and not fixing it" to real bad mildewed head liners
"like new" ones.
So I fell for the pencil skirt, make up, boobs that turns out to be bat skat crazy.

I keep going back and forth on the whole hardwood thing. I like the looks of hardwoods, but love the warmth and feel of carpet. Plus, with these 80's era 300's, there's a ton of wood on the walls, doors, and trim, down below. Kind of clashes, in my (very uneducated when it comes to décor) opinion. Still thinking.

300 Captains, those of us that have twin 350's. What's your fuel consumption like? GPH rate?

I have a DA not a WE buy at cruise, 3000-3200rpm with three adults and a good load of gear, fuel and water, I cruise around 27-29mph and burn in the neighborhood of 11-13gph per engine. I have a pair of Faria fuel flow meters installed that I use to find the 'sweet spot' just before the 4 barrels open.

So, running at 28/3000 rpm, 1/2 tank of water, 3/4 tanks of fuel 10gal per hour would be bad? Just the dog and I but loaded for the weekend with food and water foe her and I.

Scorpio, I feel that I experience the same burn rate at that RPM also. I think it's pretty reasonable for the size and weight of these boats. I also run the tabs a touch down too.

Mine is around the same. I have fuel sensors hooked in with my Garmin chartplotter/GPS. Being able to see what each motor is burning in real time makes it a lot easier to get the most out of the fuel.

Has anyone replaced their carpet in the galley with hard wood floors? If so can you post pics. thanks

Teak and holly hardwood.

Late 80's 300 Sundancer Captains (no sorry, not Weekenders), is there a removable hatch in the floor, just outside the head in your boat? I am wondering if the PO may have carpeted over one. Still curious about the location of a shower sump. The manuals show only the aft pump in the cave. (as far as I can tell)
Happy New Years!

In my '89 300 Sundancer, there's no removable hatch in the floor anywhere in the cabin. Head shower drains to the automatic sump exactly where you mention, in the aft/cave. We have a manual switch, as well, on the right side of the sink cabinet facing the commode, near the front edge just below the chrome rail.
