Official 1980's Weekender/Sundancer 300 thread

I want to do exactly the same thing on my 89 300DA so please post your results and the specs on what props you try. I don't have a 'loaner' shop near me so I want to be sure I know where to start before spending bucks.

I ended up going with the Turning Point Hustler 4 blade aluminum in a 14.5x17. I ordered them from West Marine with the thought that I could take them back if I hated them. With tax and free shipping they were $210.

My first runs were this weekend and I was happy with them. The boat jumped on plane very quickly without any tab and the bow stayed down lower than with my old 3 blade merc 14.5x19's. With the 3 blades, my heavy boat needed tabs to help get and stay on plane. At 3200 I cruised at 28-29mph which was about a 1mph increase. I was surprised by the difference in prop noise, the 4 blades have a different tone to them.

I really like the look with no stripes! Very clean.
Makes me consider leaving my 270DA stripeless...
Talked to a detailer this week who says he's had better success removing graphics from/cleaning up the classics; he feels the newer, whiter finishes retain more ghosting. I've considered pulling what's above the rub rail on mine because of cracking and fading....not sure I'd get ambitious enough to pull the waterline stripes, but Sunburnt really does look nice without them!

Just a quick image of a recent boat trip on the TN River. I'm considering a boot stripe at some point, but otherwise, I too like the naked look.

I think you guys have convinced me! I don't have a heat gun, but with a hair dryer, a lot of patience, and a cooler full of refreshing beverages I should be able to pull the above-the rail stripes in a short afternoon, eh? Would be MUCH easier to deal with the faded arch paint all by itself than match up with anything else.

(On second thought....First Mate did ask what I'd like for my birthday....)

T, if you really want a heat gun I will be happy to send you mine!

contact SeaRay about the faded arch paint. They will give you the info needed to get the new paint. It's a cheap and easy thing to do.

SWEET!!!!

(The birthday list is growing.... )

All you will need is your hull numbers when you call them

I went to a body shop supplier and got a gigantic pencil eraser that attaches to your drill motor. took me about 5 hours to get it all off.

the heat gun didn't work for me at all.

Hey guys, can you tell me where your a/c vents are located? If anyone can send me some pics specially if you have the 300 DA

My vents are the same for the aft cabin and forward birth but not in the dinette. Mine is located on the end of the dinette seat that houses the ac unit.
Yes my ac unit is under the dinette seat not all are located there. Some were installed under the forward birth.

I had my sand colored 300 Sundancer go "stripe-less" above the rub rails and loved the clean look. There was a little bit of ghosting, but you had to look for it. I did put boot stripes on it though. Since my boat had a blue color scheme, I went with a wide navy blue, and narrow silver. It looked fantastic.

When I removed all of my old stripes, I used a product named "747" that I bought in a local hardware store. It came in a yellow container and made removal a lot easier.

My boat didn't have an arch. The original owners didn't check that box on the option list.

Looks great. Thanks for the pics!

That navy and silver is really sharp!!!

Thanks!

The pics were taken on the day it went back in the water early last month. I sold the boat earlier this month, and I'm missing it. What a fantastic boat. We got a lot of great use out of it over the years, and I really enjoyed maintaining and updating it with little changes, but it's time to move up.
I listed it locally, the first guy came the next morning to see it, and he bought it. It all happened way too quickly.
I couldn't believe how many calls I got on the boat. These late 80's Sundancers are really popular.
I told him about this site and thread. Hopefully he joins in so I can keep up with what he does with the boat.
Hopefully I'll find it's replacement soon.

AC Circulating Pump

AC circulating pump. I discovered last week my PMP500 water pump for the AC needed replacing. This will be the 3rd pump on the boat, I could tell by the spliced wires. Finding a reasonable source in Canada has proven to be very difficult. I also discovered that for a 12,000 BTU unit that I have a PML250 is rated for my AC unit don't know if the previous owner up sized the pump or thats all the marina had in stock. I called 3 Dometic dealers and got prices for a PML500 as I thought that is what I needed. One had stock on the 500 only and wanted 695.00 ca with my discount 615.00 ca. I called a dealer the marina uses in Keswick I got dealer price on a PML250 for 463.00 ca which included tax. He said the 250 gallon an hour pump was fine for the 12,000 btu system and he had stock. I had to change two fitting but that was no problem. I spliced the wires just as they were previously done and tested the system, it works perfect. I could have gotten a pump off of ebay in the USA for $295.00 US but it would not have made it here by this long weekend in Canada. Plus convert 295.00 US to Canadian add in the shipping and the GST (tax) and it would have cost me more.

While we're on the topic of circulating pumps for the a/c.. has anyone ever considered wiring in a relay to make pump turn on and off with the compressor? On my 87' weekender, the fan and circulating pump run constantly. The compressor kicks on and off with temp control. I'm always nervous leaving the boat unattended with a pump running that's actually bringing water INTO the boat. It would be nice to turn the a/c on Friday evening and leave it on all weekend with more peace of mind.

Valid concern. Honestly, I never left my boat with the AC running when I wasn't there because of that reason. Luckily the cabin was small enough, and the AC unit strong enough, that it got cold in there pretty fast.

Mine is wired the same way and yes, I plan on doing that later this year.
