Official 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 Thread

Thanks AFD. We finally ordered a faucet from a online vendor that folds down, looks good and works great. Of course finding the correct parts was tough but doable. Will post picture later and try to remember where we got it. We, too are looking to replace that ice bucket with a small stainless sink so let me know if you come across something. The only thing good about the bucket is that it was deep but very hard to drain all the water out. Never did put ice in it.

Brand new in the package cockpit cover from Great Lakes. Tan color. I paid $638 when they had the 20% off sale. Looking for $500 and I'll pick up shipping to keep it simple.

edit:

I just opened the box and found a brand new bimini top boot in the package too so that will come along. A giant bag of snaps and the 3 collapsible poles for the cover, all new as well.

I have been searching everywhere for those poles. I had three that came with my mooring cover and lost one in the drink. Now I know where they came from. Thanks for your post.

for you guys hauling a dinghy, what did you do about the rear nav light? We boat at night quite a bit and I just flip the dink up on the platform which covers the light. I was thinking maybe something to clip a light on the stainless bar above the transom locker

I turned my top white light on the arch into an all round light. Not technically correct, but it worked.

Thanks, that makes sense. I found another thread where someone with a 330 just opened up the arch access panel and jumped the two together to make the all-around turn on in both nav and anchor switch positions. is that what you did?

My arch light is a "stern light" with nav lights on and at anchor, it's an all around.

Who is upset with their tabs?
I went out with another boat and they wanted to run about 19-21 knots which was great economy for them, I can't maintain plane at anything under 23knots unless it's flat glass with full tab. Has anyone replaced, upgraded their tabs on the fat heavy 290? I think I'm going to bring them to a machine shop or welding shop and have them enlarged over the winter with double turndowns unless just replacing them is cheaper.

100%. We're going on a trip across lake ontario in a month with a 370 Aft Cabin with twin 350 V drives. I'm pretty sure he cruises at like 20-22 knots. I'm not entirely sure how we're going to deal with it, I can't seem to hold plane at anything less than 24-25 knts and the boat is definitely happiest closer to 27. I also assume my mpg is significantly better at the higher speed, just based on how dug in the stern seems to be.

I might just let him go 20 minutes early and catch them

Here I am with this tug boat trying to figure out how to keep up with my express cruiser friends and you guys are trying to figure out how to go tug boat speed. Lol.

I was talking to a guy at our yacht club (we don't have our boat there tight now for several reasons-non of them bad) about some of the longer cruises they do and he said they like to maintain 20-24 knots on their cruises so everyone can enjoy the ride and I was kind of shocked. My boat loves the 26-28knots speed and sits there real nice so he said "TABS" he has a 370 express with big blocks and 4 giant tabs on the back....I just told him to learn to love throttle instead and keep up.

So i feel dumb but I'm staring at the wiring diagram and need some help. I was trying to wire the arch mast light to be a 360*. I forgot my multimeter, so I connected the two wires that appeared to be hot together with a wire nut and flipped the switch, which popped the breaker.

I am bringing the MM down today to take readings, but did you guys just connect the two wires that show +12v with the switch in each position together at the arch? I'm thinking I probably just connected the wrong wires and shorted it last time.

Thanks

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it figured out. I was screwing it up by connecting the anchor light feed to the wrong input on the light. Thanks guys

oil leak is back. lost a quart and a half over 100nm trip on the 4th. its going in this week to a shop i havent dealt with but was recomended by the guys who did the install. My boat is 70miles away from the shop that did the work because they are closer to my house where we winter store the boat.
Other than the leak, the boat is running strong and fast. wish i could stay on plane slower than 22-23 knots at 3600rpms though. i filled the tank to overflow and after exactly 50.0nm, i put 57 gallons in. if it werent for holding 8knots in the Cape Cod Canal, my milage would have been much better. still not bad for a heavy girl with twin small block carbed engines full of fuel, full of water and packed with enough for 2 adults and 2 kids (2&1) for a week and dragging our dinghy.

That's great that it runs so well..... Hopefully the oil leak is not a big deal for you.....
I think 4 blade props will help with being able to stay on plane at a lower speed and rpm....

Sounds like she's running good with the new motor. We just did 120nm to canada and back. 6 adults, full fuel, all kinds of stuff with us. 3-5's on the way there so we burned 71 gallons (4 hours) at between 11-15mph turning 3k RPM. That trip sucked

The trip back we burned 45 gallons, 1.75 hours, turning 3400 RPM. 4 adults, full fuel, vacation stuff. That worked out to be around 1.4MPG total.

Of course two days later my stbd alpha grenaded and we'll find out the prognosis today so that put a damper on things

i recomend a SEI replacement. i have one alpha and one SEI. guy that installed my motor said they had problems years ago but that he cant tell the difference in quality now. save you a bunch of money.

what do you have for props with the 5.7's? i have 21pitch 3 blade stainless and my 5.0 just reaches 4800 with full fuel and water. my 357bounces off the rev limiter at 4800 so i could use a bit more prop or same pitch with 4 blades when we finally match the engines.

I'm curious as to what diameter/pitch sized props other folks have on their 5.7 alpha one's. Wrestling with whether or not to change my 14 X 19 SS's to something else.

i have 13.75x21 quicksilver mirage i believe. i might have a different ratio drive than you though. my top speed is 42-44mph if i remember correctly.

Looking to purchase a 99 with 5.7s and alphas. What are you seeing for real world speed and gph/mpg? Love the boat wish it had bravo 3s but not against the alphas. It has the B floor plan we like the lay out does anyone have anything against it? Seems to have more storage than the A and coming from a 32 st tropez all the extra storage will be need as the wife has learned to pack heavy. Any thing that is a must look at that I might be over looking? Thank you in advanced. 3rd one we have looked at and this ones seems to fit the bill the best hoping to make a deal soon.
Mike
