Official 320 Dancer Thread

We just left the boat but I can tell you we have a Raymarine C70 in the spot (it's a fairly tight fit). According to the Raymarine site, the C70 is 10" wide by 6.96" high.

If I were you, I'd look for one of the Northstar units that you can tie your Smartcraft into - it's a very slick install.

I have a Northstar - in the panel to the left and my handheld is in the center.

A while back a couple of people asked me about my TV upgrades on the 320DA. Although we've decided to sell ithe 320DA (probably downsize to a 280DA or similar as we now have a fishing boat on the coast and won't be using the 320 as much) I thought I'd post a few pics of my upgrades.

Also, for the folks who are upgrading GPS, check out the wide Humminbird 900 series. It will fit in center space easily and can hook up to Smartcraft for real time GPS based MPG calculations. I have a Humminbird 787C2 installed and it works great with the Smartcraft gauges, plus has a fantastic depth sounder.

Here is the stock 15" LCD TV which can be moved to the radar arch:

And I mounted a 20" TV on the bulkhead similar to the 2005-2007 models.

Both are wired to an HDTV tuner, which you can see under the DVD player here (with the factory Zenith HDTV moved back to the normal location). I just bought an identical TV mount and bolted it to the radar arch so it can be moved and hooked up in less than a minute.

when you say i can tie it into my smart craft, would i get all of the features of a smart craft unit? we have the smartcraft gauges, so i assume that it will work on my boat.

Yes, you will be able to display all that data in a very cool way. I think Dave S. tied his Smartcraft into a Northstar display and posted pictures - Dave?

Dang. How much do you want for that boat? It looks GOOD. :smt038

(only wish I was serious. . .. no room for a 32DA on my dock )
(and not enough money in my wallet to upgrade the dock.)
(or to buy the boat. . for that matter  )

(although if the market keeps going up. . . . .delay retirement a couple of years. . . .)

To hook up a GPS to your Smartcraft Gauges:

If you look under the dash, the Smartcraft gauges have a wiring harness with a blue and white wire. If you have a Raymarine or other factory installed GPS/VHF, they will be hooked to that. If you have no GPS, they should be unused.

One is a NMEA0183 signal wire, and one is the NMEA0183 ground. Connecting these to an NMEA0183 compatible GPS will give you a GPS based speed and mileage calculation, as opposed to the unreliable engine pitot pressure sensor.

To get engine data on a GPS display, you'd need to tap into the signal out wires from the Smartcraft unit. Haven't done that yet but seems like lots of folks have.

I'll probably buy an ad on the classifieds section if a few local leads don't pan out. But I have it for sale locally for *MUCH* less than any blue hull v-drive 2004 320DA listed on yachtworld, so it should be the best priced 320DA like it in the country.

delliott00 ...great looking pics. Did you do the install on the cockpit tv yourself? What kind of mount did you use? I have considered adding a cockpit tv on my 300DA.

Yes. It was easy. I unbolted the TV in the cabin in order to see what brand/model of mounting bracket it used. Then I went on ebay and bought an identical one (I think it was an OmniMount) for about $25. That way it will slide right onto either location.

Then its a matter of getting an extra power cord (I had one laying around) and fishing that down to the outlet under the sink (where the fridge plugs in). In addition, I ran video/audio cables into the bilge. Then I used a cable snake to run them along the inside of the hull to under the cabin galley counter. Then its a matter of running them up through the TV cabinet to the stock DVD location. Takes time, but is not particularly hard.

Its a great upgrade. Sitting in the cockpit watching a movie or football game is a great way to wind down a day on the water.

Prop shafts snapping like candy canes. Broke my second prop shaft yesterday:( Port broke three weeks ago. Mechanic says when I grounded last year local dealer replaced rudder, shafts, struts and wheels but did not alighn the shats to the transmision and motors.

Natrualy I upped my deductable to 1500.00 and the last coat was 1380.00.

Has any one seen this before?

For all of you talking about using Smartcraft data..........the protocol is proprietary unlike NMEA so unless you know something I don't you won't be able to do it.

Right now only Northstar and Navaman provide such an interface and it is plug and play on thier units. My chartplotter is one of the smaller units but if you look at my posting on the subject you can get an idea of what's possible with one of their chartplotters. http://www.byowneryachts.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1253&start=0

we ended up going with a c70 like cj has and I am very pleased. The pathfinder Plotter/radar that came on the boat is getting repaired. My speedometer was not working last time we took the boat out is the factory plotter being gone to blame for this?

Shared Punch Lists

Any thoughts of all the 2007 320 DA owners sharing punch lists at the near end of the summer (in case any of us miss things)?

Great idea! My list has about 20 items so far. Is yours comparable? Some small items but a few majors. Nothing that has kept me from enjoying the boat.

You had mentioned wanting an outlet in the cockpit like the 420DA. You have one, sort of. When I had the tundra cockpit fridge installed I had the 110 outlet moved so it remains usable in the cockpit--if memory serves it is above the refrigerator, and ought to be accessible from the storage area forward of the refrigerator. The tundra uses one of the plugs for 110 operation, but you still have one plug free.

Skip,

The only problem with that outlet is that it is inside that storage area, thus I have to have the door open to use it. I did figure out an easier way to get access however - I picked up a short extention cord that I can route down through the port side lounger.

Basically I was looking for an easier way to plug in my chili lights.

Hey guys What is your average RPMs for cruise on your 320's? In my 240DA, below 3000 rpm, and she'd fall off plane. I cruised at about 3200-3400 for a nice easy ride on both the fuel guage and the engine. Is the 320 similar for planing RPMs? The boat im looking at has 6.2 V's just for reference.

Mike, I am repeating a bit from the other thread you have started, but I could never cruise the 320 with 350MAG Horizons at 3200-3400. She would fall off of plane unless I had a whole lot of tab on. We cruised at 3900-4000. The 350s are rated at 4800 WOT, so you are around ~88-90% of WOT at the cruise RPM I allude to. I have no first hand experience with the boat with 6.2s, but I do not imagine the performance will be dramatically different...6.2s turn the same prop, and get their 20 add'l HP at the top of the RPM range.

I too cruised my 260DA at 3100, but that is not really a useful comparison...but she sure was easy on fuel!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. If I were in the market for a 30-ish foot dancer, I would shop hard for a 340DA with 8.1s. I have seen them on the web for the low 100s. Sure, you might need to clean gelcoat and replace canvas, but I think Sea Ray nailed it with the 340 design, and with 8.1s you will not want for more power. I only have 2 hours at the helm of an 8.1 IB 340, but I was really impressed with how that boat came on plane and ran with the big blocks. I'd guess fuel burn delta between a 320 with 5.7s/6.2s turning 4000 RPM and a 340 with 8.1s running at 3200 RPM is negligible, but my 340 helm time is limited. The 340 owners will know for sure.

good luck with whatever you elect to do-you are in a buyer's market-

Has anyone installed rod holders in the gunwals of a 320. I was intrested in putting a couple in and wanted to get some measurments from anyone that has them already installed so when I drill there will be no worries.

Also I wanted relay a upgrade on my head lighting. On my boat all the cabin lights had to be on to have the head light on. Needless to say this wakes up the crew at night. Sea Ray corp told me that 320 models that do not have the large tv on the bulkhead needed to be updated. They then installed a switch over the electric panel where I have to high hats now the head lighting works independent of the cabin lighting. This was a big plus,
