Official 390DA Thread

Looking at a 07 40 sd with 8.1s. What are the many areas or things to look for and what are the first thing to do to the boat?
If you are getting serious about buying, highly recommend a qualified survey that includes a compression tes and moisture scan. How many engine hours on this boat?

1000 hrs and 3 years ago. Survey is scheduled in the next few weeks. It does have a bow thruster and hydrolic swim platform

I had a 05 390 with 8.1. At a 1000 hrs they’re close to needing a rebuild, I’d assume. Def ask for maintenance records for the last few years
Really? With regular maintenance I see them hitting 2,000 hours easy. Mine go through zero oil between oil changes. I put new plug wires (Quicksilver not knockoffs) and plugs. The tech doing that indicated they are bulletproof if maintained. I read and hear about sensors going bad and as stated tough on plugs but worn out at 1,000 hours? I say no way.

I just talked to the tech at the marina the other day. They just did heads on an 8.1 with 2500 hours. He said blocks were in perfect conditio. It all depends on maintenance done.

Big block Chevy engines are bulletproof. I hear the stories about boats run at higher rpm’s than cars. Not the cars I've had. My current Chevelle will be running at about 3200 rpm at 70 mph. Ain't scared to run across the state like that. I've had plenty like that over the years and never blew one up.

There isn't much needed to do to "maintain" them. In fact the 390DA makes a noise when it's due for a tune up. The trans gears will start making noise idling in gear.

Whats the fuel burn rate on the gas gennys?
About a quarter per hour unloaded, charging batteries ect. About 2 quarts per hour under load like air-conditioning. Kohler 7300 here.

anyone replace the vhf radio? what did u go with and did u remove the old one from the side wall in cockpit?
