Official Cummins 6cta 450C thread

OK, great. As I mentioned, the shop is putting WF2122's on (no additive) and they are using Compleat ES, so I'm getting additive there. I'll check a sample after I run it some and see what the levels are.

And before I get any grief about having a shop do the coolant change, I had them do it because they had the boat for a few other larger items, so I'm just getting it done as a small add on. :)

Ahhh. I missed that you were doing a coolant change. Yes, go with a blank the first year of the new SCA loaded coolant. Then start the WF2071 dance annually.

FYI, I change the coolant every five years. Don’t remember how I figured that out, just that I did figure it out once.

Actually, I try to follow that maintenance schedule you put together a while ago (in the 400 forum, I think?). In that, you mentioned changing the filter annually or every 300 hours. I think I'm following the "every 300 hours" path a bit too strictly. Ha ha. This is our fifth season with the boat, so it was time!

You pretty much can’t go wrong just putting a new WF2071 on each year. Like Mark, that’s how mine tests out every year and that’s what I swap in every oil change annually.

But I just take the tank top off and dip it in there. Can’t tell you if that’s right or wrong.
I think that's correct or that's what I read somewhere. Did the same last fall. Also read that the coolant should be at room temp.

I went to start the port engine today….. nothing….. so convinced it was the starter Solenoid again….. I had a spare but was not in the mood to change it out (hungover) so I jumped it with a screwdriver. Funny thing was… it was fine after that. So was it just stuck?….. seems a bit odd….. this is the second time in 3 years that this has happened to that engine. Last time it happened the Cummins tech told me he keeps a half dozen in his truck….. they fail all the time

I had my port starter rebuilt this year, issue was a corroded solenoid. Wonder if you have some corrosion in there that is making it finicky?

I replaced the starter solenoid back in 2010 and again this year. Of course it's always the port motor (V-drive) so it's a challenge to squeeze back there. Back in 2010 the solenoid failed on the first day of a two week trip north so I got fairly adept at a "screwdriver start". From then on I carried a spare solenoid.
Other causes: not in Neutral (as mentioned), and a failing connection (ring connector) to the solenoid.

Found this under my port motor. Looks relatively clean and no wrench marks. Any ideas? No obvious signs of origin.

It looks like one of the mounting bolts on my aftercooler. It may have come off without the paint coming off.
Someone may have forgotten to tighten it. They are murder to get to on my port motor.

Thanks, will start there.

When I was buying my boat, I found one just like that under one of the motors. Never had a wrench on it. The owner was freaking out. Ten years and 3000 hours later and I still don't know where it came from. There are several places on the motor that it could come from, and Totally is right, it could be from the aftercooler brackets. Or the tranny cooler bracket or the filter heads, or...
You'll just have to look around. Maybe it'll become part of your spares store, like mine.

Question for the group. 400 sedan bridge with 8.3L CTA

We were on a 5 hour run and in the 4th hour my Starboard engine shut off.
The only thing wierd was I noticed earlier on that my Volt meter for that side was jumping all around, its normally very stable.

I was able to start it and run another 30 mins and same thing happened. Last time starting I had to use the emergency start but it did start and ran long enough to get home.

While troubleshooting on the water I switched racor filters, but kept thinking it was a voltage issue.

Any thoughts appreciated

Jamie

Were you getting charge on the volt meter coming from the alternator? Where I'm going with this is, if your alternator stopped charging, you were loosing voltage to the point when the battery didn't have enough juice to have the engine running. As a result, it could have shut the fuel pump. This is with assumption that the genny was off and the battery had no means of getting recharged.
