I just bought my 290 and was in the engine compartment - How do you access the oil drain plug on the oil pan? It seems impossible to access so your help will be appreciated

You can extract the oil through the dipstick tube by using an electric or manual pump made for this purpose.

Wow! This looks like the ticket, thank you!
I have had others this is by far the best I have used. Spent $100 on a vacuum hand pump and could not get 5-5.5 quarts, I get seven out with this one. It’s worth the extra. I do have the garden type connection. In my dip stick which is the way to go imo

Garden type connection? What is that?

Basically, most extraction oil pumps have a female garden attachment hose that can attaché to the dipstick is so equipped. They also have a very thin hose that you push into the dip stick tube to suck out that way. For me, using the garden hose attachment works better

I am familiar with the thin hose that goes down the dipstick tube.
Where does the garden hose attach to?

Perfect! Thank you
You’re welcome.
FYI, there are many members here wiling to offer advice and help out. But sometimes a simple YouTube video will provide much more info than we can provide with the written word.

When I bought my boat 5 years ago I had little marine maintenance experience.

YouTube videos were and are still are a great learning tool. Even if you don’t do a specific repair yourself, having some knowledge of how it’s done will be useful when you need to hire a mechanic.

But does extracting the oil through the dipstick tube pull out the sludge sitting in the bottom of the oil pan. My boat has a tube attached to the oil pan drain plug that I pull out of the boat drain plug hole.

Sludge won't drain no matter what way you do it. However, there most likely isn't much, if any sludge. Draining through the remote oil drain hose vs pumping gets maybe 6oz more. Oil extractors can be attached to the drain hose to make the process quicker.

Yes, in the Mercruiser video in the above reply this option is shown toward the end of it. I can see adding that as an option to drain the oil that way when it is out of the water.
