Oil From Costco

Brett - The 5W40 Mobil Delvac ESP 1 is the only oil MAN specifically says meets their requirements. I’m supposed Performance Diesel didn’t say that. I don’t have the guts to try something else! Even if it is $40 a gallon. Is the Kirkland full synthetic?

Carter,
My communication with Lucas at Performance Diesel was from 2014. At that time he provided a link (now broken) to the approved lubricants on the MAN website for my engines. As you can imagine, the majority of the oils on the list were European brands that are not available in the US. Based on your comment, I am guessing that your engines have different requirements than mine. My engines are the D2848LE403's (800HP Mechanical) and they do not require synthetic.

That’s probably it Brett. I have the common rail 900’s. I looked for the list my “MAN man” gave me, but I haven’t found it yet, but you are 100% correct - the list was long with European brands not available here. The only US oil on my list was the Delvac ESP.

Costco also has wine they sell under the Kirkland brand. Some of it is very good, would buy again in a heartbeat. Actually prefer some of the vintages.

But not risking very much, just a headache the next day.

The Kirkland Pinot Grigio is terrible! I’d rather drink MD20/20 from 7-11! The merlot is just okay.

Maybe their Costco oil is the same way. Perhaps they make the oil from the same grapes as the wine.

Following up.... I serviced the MAN's two weeks ago. Since I'm landlocked on a relatively small lake, I end up changing the oil twice as often as MAN recommends. The Kirklands oil would have probably worked just fine since it meets the Manufactures Technical Specification, but I'm not price driven and am a creature of habit. I stayed with the Delo 400 (recommended by Performance Diesel for my engines).

that's what I use in my genny - Delo 400. $32 for 2 1/2 gal at WM. I hate going in there, but that's a pretty good deal.

I did find the gold plated Mobil Delvac ESP at Tractor Supply - 2 1/2 gal for $52 - heck of a deal.
