My starboard engine is throwing off a hell of an oil slick while running. As soon as a start the engine I get a nice rainbow around the boat. There is no fuel smell so im gueesing its oil. Pulled all the plugs and they look perfect. Engines run perfect and no water in the oil and oil levels are perfect. The only thing I can think of is the oil cooler? Any thoughts? Thanks

Sorry to hear of your newest issue! I think your on the right track. Either the transmission cooler (check your fluid for water) or the engine oil cooler may be leaking once up to normal operating temps.

Mechanic told me this could be due to drive lube ending up in the exhaust when they rebuilt my drive.... of course I just looked at your sig and you're on straight drives. Never mind, carry on ;)

It wont take much oil to make a nice rainbow in the water...(ooooh pretty).
Im guessing (like you) you are loosing oil out the cooler but, just not enough to notice yet!

Swap the oil coolers side to side and see if the problem follows....or just get new ones!
Sea Kamp brand replacements are around $120 per side and easy peasy to change.
Might also want to replace the transmission coolers while your at it.

Good luck,

Mark.

Thanks guys gals. Guees I have a new project this week. It never ends does it?. So lemme ask u this. If it is the cooler and oil is coming out can water be getting in? Should I change the oil after I do the cooler? Should I change the trans cooler and oil cooler? Or just do one and if its not fixed do the other? Should I do both engines? If one flside failed the other has to be pretty close yes?

Now what if I change both coolefs and the problem still exists. What's my next step?

You slick could be transmission fluid as the transmission pressuizes and you would be dumping it into the raw water steam it then mixes at the elbows if you are fresh water cooled and dumps overboard. I would do both oil and transmission to be sure you got it.

I had similar issues with my 1997 330 twin 7.4 & V drives. I disconnected the water lines from the oil cooler to the drive shaft seals and sure enough, oil was coming out of starboard cooler the fitting to the shaft seal. I replaced both oil coolers and the transmission coolers. When I disconnected the water lines I found the fittings to be so corroded that they came loose from the coolers. I had a real challenge in locating replacement fittings. They were thin-walled and every source I went to could only come up with thick walled fittings. Finally, I located an old-time hardware store in York, PA that carried thin walled fittings.

Good luck it finding and fixing your oil leak,

Coolers should be it.

Heat exchangers are a wear items and many don't have zincs, just drains.
Mine (yours should be similar) doesn't have enough depth to accept a pencil zinc in the drain plug hole so, i wired it to the boats main bonding system.
You could also cut down a pencil zinc to fit but, will be left with very little protection.

As far as a "next step" if necessary...........?????

Bring an umbrella today, happy hunting.

Mark.

Ha no umbrella needed with my bildge lol

Just called the marine supply and they have them in stock. But there not merc parts. I know with manifolds thats a nono. Is it the same with aftermarket coolers? I doblike the idea of connecting it to the bonding system but isnt the engine connected to the bonding system thus making the coolers already connected as well? They also told me the trans cooler and the oil cooler are the same type of cooler?
Now as for the trans. After I install the new cooler is draining the trans as simple as pulling the plug drain and refill. I have the manual at home so I will be following that but just curiouse.
One more. What kind of oil does the trans use and how much? Its a bw .

Well just pulled tranny cooler and checked trans fluid. Tranny is empty and the fluod looks like penacillian. A nice solid pink..... what's the best way to flush whatever is in there out

You can use something like this to pump out through the fill hole.

I suggest changing it a couple of times every few hours along with the filter.

Hey you found the problem....GREAT!

I very much like the SeaKamp brand.
They look like OEM. without the sticker shock.
(I don't think of coolers like exhaust manifolds).
You might have to suck out the old, just like changing engine oil.
Unless you have a built in exchanger.
To flush it your going to have to change it at least twice.

Thanks everybody again. Now were is the filter on my trans? Velvet drive 5000? And I wont get all the oil out by the dip stick hole method correct? Thats why I change it a couple times? How many quarts do I buy and what kind of atf do I use

I've been trying to look up we're the filter is and I can't come up with anything? We're Cani find it.
Know I went to a marine supply store and the had the tranny cooler.now I did not buy it because it was 369 doll hairs but the one they showed me was 16incheslong. Mine is 12. Now I looked up the part number myself and the same 16'' one came up. I also looked at aftermarket ones which are 130$ (much better) and they are also 16'' long. Does it matter. Everything else is the same.
so the local auto parts store has the Dexron 3 that I need? Any brand is good.
I feel like my dog just ran away lol. Pretty upset
