SO I picked up an old used generator, it has the Nissan 988 (4) cyl
hasn't run in god knows how long, hour meter says 433
turns over decently but had no spark, new points and coil installed
I now have a healthy spark
Problem is I have no compression or vacuum
pulled the valve cover, valves move, things look fine
pulled intake and exhaust manifold, nothing noteworthy
manual talks about timing marks on crank pulley and cam pulley
but I can't find anything on the crank pulley, on the cam there is a 0 stamped
about where the pic in the manual shows it

does anyone know how the crank pulley mark corresponds to the crank key ?
also will the pistons hit the valves if radically out of time ?
trying to avoid pulling the head since a new headgasket is probably pretty rare

thanks in advance for any and all help

So... if you have NO compression or vacuum, there's no sense in attempting to get it to start.

My GUESS... is overhead cam, driven by a toothed belt?? If so, make sure that belt is intact, then look for timing marks anywhere it would be possible for timing referencess between block and drive sheave, and head and driven sheave.

Weld up an air hose adapter using an old spark plug and a piece of 1/4" pipe... put a little hand-shutoff on a short jumper to that pipe, so you can apply a shot of air to a cylinder.

Put the piston at TDC power stroke. Both valves SHOULD be down. With manifold off, apply air into that cyl, and check-see which port (intake or exhaust) you're getting flow. If it's coming out the crankcase breather, then it's coming down the cylinder, past the piston somehow. If it's blowing out exhaust or intake ports, you've got a bent valve or four... or eight...

That is probably a Nissan Industrial, similar to what's used in small forklifts, mini-excavators, etc.

Dave is dead-on, on all accounts. You can't really get any parts from Quicksilver, but as soon as you figure out what else used that engine, you should be able to get all the engine parts that aren't Quicksilver-specific. This is the case with all marine generators.

Okay, so I'm sitting in a hotel room after a long day-an-a-half of driving, with another day left...

I did some searching for Nissan 988... I think that MIGHT be related to the Nissan 'A' engine, and there's a little bit about it on the web, but very little reference to any 'industrial' variants. I DO know that my company forklift has a Nissan 4cyl, I haven't a clue WHICH, but the machine is a mid-late 90's era.

Everything I SEE so far, is a pushrod-OHV design, not an OHC... haven't found anything referencing the industrial flavor.

Put some air pressure on it, see where the air comes out... and post some pictures!!! ;)

We have a QS5.0 in our 91 Sundancer Have had very little trouble. Have heard this:
It is Nissan Micra 1.2 liter. Mark above noted a supplier that has limited items. 5.0 and 7.5 use same engine. Back end is based on Generac. Look up a post on Facebook under SeaRay Restorations by Jake Mott. He sounds knowledgeable. Says engine parts are available in Canada or Rock Auto in US

Thanks for all of the responses, I figured out the Micra Nissan connection, I have a gasket set coming so I will pull the head off soon

Rod, if you determine yours is shot and would like to sell some parts. I have a froend that needs some exhaust parts.
