I'm up on a maintenance item on my Cummins Onan MDKBN generator. That is inspection of the rear bearing. Nothing in the manual on what that inspection is. Must be to look for seal failure or other bearing failure signs. It is a sealed ball bearing.
Has anyone done this inspection or had someone do it? Info?

Thanks
Tom

I asked my mechanic about it and he told me it would cost as almost much to inspect it as to fix it if it went bad. He recommended to ignore that particular maintenance item.

So, it's not as simple as pulling a cover off and looking I take it.
Did he mention what the inspection consisted of?

Interesting one schedule says "inspect' at 2000 hours and another says "change" at 5 years/2000 hours.
I don't really remember. It seems to me he said you had to separate the generator from the motor to gain access to the bearing.
Not on the MDK series (eQD). The bearing is at the very back of the armature. The engine rear crankshaft bearing supports the front of the armature. Access to "inspect" should be simply removing the rear closeout plate. Replacing the bearing would probably require the removal of the complete rear support housing Item 17. I simply don't know what this maintenance item entails. Item 4 in this drawing is that bearing -
