"Dear ______________
Please accept my sincere apologies for not being able to attend your ____________. As you know, my passion is boating and spending as much time aboard as we can. Ontario's short boating season and the high costs associated with the boat to sit idle (unused for a weekend) requires me to say no to all non boating events planned during this boating season. Please don’t take this personally, but I hope you understand my formal summer weekend policy. If you would like to move your special event after November 15th and before April 15th, I would be happy to attend. I hope you respect my position, as I respect yours selecting a date that ruins everyone’s summer weekend plans which everyone is dreading going to anyways.
Knowing that you will not change the date to accomodate my schedule, please find enclosed a cheque as a gift."

That is great! Love it

Love it! I have been looking for this, thank you for posting it.

I have been passing this around to family and friends for at least 20 years. It's an oldie, but a goodie.

“The Memo”

Many of our boating friends ask us during the boating season (May to October) why we choose not to go to cookouts, weddings, birthday parties, funerals, confirmations, christenings, hangings, etc. so that we can have our weekends free to boat.
This is why:

Dear ________________

Please accept our sincere apologies for not being able to attend your special function.
As you know, our passion for boating requires that we spend as much time aboard as we can. The short boating season in this part of the world and the high costs associated with the boat to sit idle (unused for a weekend) requires us to say no to all non-boating events planned during this boating season.
Please don’t take this personally, but we hope that you understand our formal summer weekend policy. If you would like to move your special event to after fall lift-out and before our splash date in the spring, we would be happy to attend.
We hope that you respect our position, as we respect yours selecting a date that ruins everyone’s summer weekend plans which everyone is dreading going to anyways.

Boating is not a matter of life or death ... it is really far more important than that!!

On our dock at our marina we call these FFOs...Forced Family Obligations (sometimes the first "F" is swapped for a more colorful "F" word). We hate FFOs.

One could use this excuse for ANY activity.... golf, flying, fishing, etc., etc. No need for excuses, just say you can't make it cuz you boat then. No biggie. I do that all the time, but because I live in FL and have other activities, boating doesn't occupy a "season"... it's all year round.
