5.7L. 6.2, 8.1, or no care!
Guys, I think I might have to pull the trigger on a 06 240 I found.

5.7L, 72 hours, garmen chartplotter, Tralerable bottom pain. Looks mint. He said he would take 30500, with a trailer.

I was leaning towards a 260, but think this is too good to possibly pass up.

What do you think?

Also, any advice on financing, and sea trials? Do I do the financing after inspecting the boat thoroughly and having a sea trial?

I wanted a boat for weekend get aways off Jersey/Long Island cruising with the family..

I dont think power will be concern, it has the 5.7. I looked at pics of the seating set up, and it looks like 5 would be the most to be comfortable. The 260 looks more open to 7 ish?

The price is enticing. I found a 260 with 190 hours, gen, and 6.2L, clean, no bottom paint asking $47K plus $3K for trailer. I was thinking about offering 40K with trailer.

Thoughts? Think if they take the $40K offer on the 260 its worth the extra 10K?

I would think so. Talk to others in your area about what you need to be comfortable ans safe where you wish to boat. MM

I have this boat and 2 adults with 2 small children are fine. And I have the 5.0 and it is fine. 72 hours is low. I would make sure you sea trail it.

Thanks Alvin. We have a 5 yo so it would be 3, plus 2-3 more people. Is 6 too crowded?

How do you like it. Its my first boat, again seems for 30K its a great value. We would use it for just off shore cruising, nothing major. Would be nice to go up the hudson see the city at night etc.

IMO 10K is worth it just for the generator on the 260, if its a clean 2005-2008 I doubt you can buy it with a trailer for 40k but thats a good deal if you can. Most likely it has heat and air as well if it has a generator. The 240 is a decent boat but the 260 feels much larger, I was looking at both, spent quite a bit of time looking and sitting in them and decided on a 260, mostly because I wanted a generator.

The 5.7 is barely adequate in a loaded up 260, 6.2 really isnt a huge step up but any little bit helps. Either boat will be OK for a family with a couple small kids. The 260 is heavy though, my 8800lb lift barely picks up this 260 with full fuel and water tanks. I wouldnt tow a loaded 260 any distance with a 1/2 ton, the 240 would be fine.

Either boat sounds like a good deal, but IMO if you can get a similar condition 260 for 10 grand more with a generator its well worth it.

I have owned a 2006 240DA with similar hours and features for 3 years and have been very happy with it. It seats 5 comfortably, but for overnight trips 4 is more practical. I was considering selling it earlier this year and was looking to list it at 38k, so 30k sounds like a good deal.

3 Ppl in a 240 overnight is fine with no issues as long as the 3rd person is a kid or teenager :). If you add 2-3 adults for overnighting that won't work. If you are going to add 2-3 ppl just for cruising for the day it will be tight. Just for some reference, in the rear bench seat I can seat 2 adults and my 2 kids, and can put 2 adults on the port side seats, then me as the captain, so that is 7ppl. I have put 8 on 5 Adults and 3 kids for a quick trip or a raftup right outside my marina in the Raritan bay. 7-8 gets tight. Unless you are rafting up and swimming having 7-8 on board all the time isn't comfy. Luckly, I usually always go out with my brother-in-law who has a 2010 Monterey 260SCR which is a 28ft LOA so we usually split the load and raft up which doesn't make it seemed as cramped with alot of ppl.

When we do overnight trips I will only do it with my wife and 2 kids. Kids love it. :)

As far as price I can tell you 30k with trailer is a great deal in this area unless there is something wrong with it. Make sure you seatrial it and get a trusted surveyor. Happy to help awnser any question about the boat if needed. I have everything in my boat minus AC and Genny. I don't think a Genny was an option. As far as AC, I bought a cruisair hatch window AC and it works great. I run a fan as well that blows the AC to the mid cabin and cools the cabin to around 73 inside the cabin when it is 95 plus outside. You can get them used in on our area on craigslist fairly cheap compared to the price that West Marine is charging for new at $1200.

As far as using it for LI and up the Hudson it will be fine. You do need to watch the weather though. For example, this weekend we were going to go out on Sunday and got to the boat at 10am and it was blow NE around 5MPH. When the family got down at 11am it starting gusting to 15MPH and the tide was running fast (Thanks to the Blue Moon on Friday). Other boats went out and about 30 minutes later they all cameback in and said the bay was gusting hard with whitecaps. So we just stayed at the marina and fished for snappers. :)

I have taken my boat up the Hudson past Statue of Liberty, went to Long Island through Jones Inlet to Jones beach and the areas around it, taken it down to Barnegat bay via the Manasquan inlet to Point Plesant Canal, out fishing on it 7 miles off the coast. (But I watched the weather and picked my days carefully). I have been in some Ruff chop 3-5 seas. Was not fun or comfy for us but the boat handled it with no problems. As far as going up the Hudson at night to NYC. I haven't don't it myself yet do to the debree that the hudson has past the Verazanno. Gone up their plenty of times during the day, but haven't ventured their at night.

If you need any other info or help with the 06 let me know.

$30,500 with only 72 hours seems almost too good to be true. I thought I got a great deal on my 09 with 60 hours with trailer, and I paid a fair amount more (but mine is heavily optioned and still under warranty - dealer show boat). Sea trial and thorough inspection a must IMHO.
