Greetings All,

Well here we go, thanks in advance for listening and opinions. Believe it or not, my recently purchased 76 Sedan Bridge does not have a stereo in it. I haven't dug deep enough to see if it never had, or was just eliminted by the owners. (Now in thier late seventies) I have a background in car audio but want to do this boat right the first time.

First of all I'd like to stay modular, as I mentioned in my introduction there's alot of other things to do to will cost mucho dinero. My idea is a head unit that has at least two sets of pre-outs and a sub out. I want to have the big guns on the flybridge, with complimentary sets of speakers in the cockpit, saloon and front berth. As she will be either moored or dry docked for the next several months I plan on only installing the speakers in the flybridge and berth to get going. Later I can add an amp for the flybridge speakers then the cockpit or saloon. I also need wired remote capability, as the whole rig will probably be mounted inside the cabin. Dual remote is also an added benefit.

My biggest concern is that there aren't alot of models like mine that have been successfully retrofitted with success so I get to be a guinea pig. She here's some questions for some opinions.

1) Flybridge: I'm thinking of mounting the speakers opposing each other in the walls on either side of the captain's chair. Has anybody had any concerns about speakers directly opposing each other such as audio phase problems? I'm also concerned about freeboard, or lack thereof.

2) Head units: I've scoured the archives here and was somewhat taken by the zonal approach by Fusion, but have never seen many reviews, and they seem costly in a performance to dollar ration. I think I could achieve a similar effect by planning ahead and using the fader. I can only be in one place at a time, and typically my passengers are the girl de'jour, and one or two other couples. Please plug your favorite brand/model here. I have always had luck with Kenwood and Sony, not-so-much with Pioneer. I've also recently seen Boss posted here, but always thought of them as a K-Mart line.

3) Wired remotes: Is there such a thing as a "y" cable to have two remotes? Depending on the location of the head end, I know I will need one on the flybridge, and possibly in the forward berth. I like the ones with an LCD for more flexibility.

4) Auxillary in: I would like one with a rear aux in, as my last boat had front input, and it looks cheesy running a wire from the front of the head in. Since I will not ever own anything Apple, I use a creative labs Zen 80gb MP3 player, that I will mount on the dash of the flybridge and control it manually.

Sorry to be so long winded, but that is the master plan. I wuill add amps later for at least the flybridge and cockpit, after I figure out where the cockpit speaker will be placed.

Thanks for your input and opinions.

John

You're going to have fun with this one! I think you're on the right track - I'd recommend marine grade speakers. I currently have Infiniti's in the cockpit and wouldn't recommend them - others seem to really like the JL's which is probably what I'll go with later this year. I don't think you'll have a problem with the speakers facing each other - would be similar to most automotive applications where the speakers in the doors are typically facing straight out and into each other.

I wasn't sure about the wired remote - I've seen boats with 2 but wasn't sure how they did that. I did a quick search and it appears Clarion offers a splitter cable - but then obviously you are stuck with their headunits. Cable is here.

I put a Sony headunit in mine over the holidays - went that route because it was extremely cheap and is really an interim thing until I replace the entire system. Wally world had a Sony CD, 4 speakers + wireless remote for $98! It is not marine grade but is installed in the cabin so wasn't worried about it. It has the front mount aux input which doesn't look the greatest but it sounds pretty good for a temp solution.

I recently upgraded my stereo system, and seems to be what you want, but on a much smaller boat...lol.

I replaced the head unit with a Sony CDX-M30. It has the sub out you want, and also a rear out. The problem with this head unit, for you anyways, is that the Aux jack is in front. It comes with a wireless remote. I have gotten it wet during a thunderstorm. I replaced the corroded battery and it still works. I now keep it in a small plastic bag to protect it.

This head unit accepts two different wired remotes, the RM-X55M and the RM-X11M. I actually have both installed on my boat. I use the 55 by my steering wheel. It has the LCD display so you can see the time, station, etc. I have the 11 on the transom by the swim platform. The 11 does not have the LCD display. I know you can daisy chain two remotes, as I have. I do not know if you can add anymore though. I do not think so. All is marine grade. I am a big fan of Sony, but would not recommend their speaker products. Stick with JLs or clarion.

If you go this route, drop me a line, I can go into more depth on the install.

Alpine's new marine radios allow the use of more then one remote and their remotes are RF so you don't have to run wires. They also have marine speakers and amps. I haven't heard their marine speakers yet and I know that JL makes very nice marine speakers.
