Recently had to have the transom shield replaced on my 260 DA. Now the helm center is off. The shop told me that there is nothing that can be done to adjust it. I find this hard to believe. What can be done?

If it's a rack and pinion cable system there would be two places you can adjust:

- Remove the steering wheel, if it's a spline shaft you can preposition the steering wheel.
- The cable should have some adjustment where it connects to the steering arm at the transom.

with mechanical steering ,if the guide tube is held by a nut on each side, loosen one and tighten the other one .
With PS , there is no adjusting at the transom.

Im assuming it is power steering. So what can be done?

If the steering shaft is splined, you can remove the wheel and turn it a few "notches" to get it centered. If it is tapered/keyed, that won't work, but you might be able to move the whole steering hub one way are the other - they are usually held on by 6-8 bolts. Just have to get behind your helm and look at it.
