Outdrive noise...taking on water...

Hello and thans for another very helpfull forum.

Bought my boat about 3 months ago,had it out about 7-10 times and it ran great. A few things here and there, but so far so good. When I open the engine compartment while running, I can hear an intermittent tick coming from the outdrive. Is not consistant with RPM, should I look into it? Also, when turning the wheel, I hear a difference in sound coming from the outdrive as well. Does not sound bad, just a little louder than when not turning. Does this sound like a normal operating sound? When I bought the boat, they guy told me the motor and outdrive were recently serviced. The motor oil is crystal clear so I believe him. And he seems to have taken good care of it.

Lastly, the boat takes on more water than it should. I haven't been able to locate the leak yet. I keep the boat out of the water. Yesterday I filled the bilge with water and let it sit for a half hour. There was no seeping from the drain plug, lower outdrive or anywhere noticeable. I'm guessing it's either from the cooling system or upper outdrive? Any suggestions or just drop it in the water and get in there with a flashlight?

Thanks,

Ed

noise sounds like your u-joints and gimble are dry. have the out drive serviced.

as for the water, how fast is it taking on water?

OK...I've been thinking about having the OD serviced, but currently waiting for my cockpit enclosure to be finished. I will definitely have it serviced before taking it out again.

I have to run the bilge every half hour or so the last time out. Cruised for an hour or so steady.

check the boots if they are leaking gimbel whould start to freeze up and make noice look where shaft comes in boat for leak (when in water).

Don't overlook the shift cable bellows. It may be small but when I had my 24' Sorrento I had a lot of water that came in that way.

If it's not the bellows, your transom may be rotted out, thats what did in my 80's vintage SR.

Just the thought of that freaks me out. I thought I finally got a descent boat. It doesn't appear to be rotted out and I filled the bilge with water, let it sit for a half hour with no seeping. How do you tell if the transom is rotted out?

Re: Outdrive noise...taking on water...Major Work???

Today is my birthday and I received bad news. The guy from Maveric Marine in Van Nuys called me and asked that I come down to see what needs to be done and why. The bellows was in fact leaking, the u-joints are very rusted… gimbal bearing, steering shaft…all in all it is about a $5,000 quote to repair the outdrive. This is so disturbing…but, I guess I learn another lesson; have the boat inspected prior to purchasing. I paid $5,000 for the boat about 2 months ago, just had a front enclosure done that cost about $1000. Put a new VHF radio and installed a fishfinder/GPS. I will not pay $5,000 to have this fixed. I have to pay about $800 for them to put it back together with the outdrive serviced and it will be running how it was before I took it in. I see outdrives on E-bay for about $1300, has anyone used one? Do you recommend them? They come with a 3 year warranty. What I’m seriously considering is selling the boat as soon as I get it back. I only want to get what I paid for it. I’ll eat the loss on the enclosure. What are some opinions and what would you do?

Thanks,

Wait,

There is something wrong, either you didn't relay all of what needs to be fixed, or somebody is getting, aah how can I say this in a family oriented forum?, taken advantage of.

You can install a brand new/reman outdrive for $ 5 k.

This spring I had complete bellows replacement, with gimbal bearing and u-joint, plus spring engine service, plugs etc + serpentine belt, plus the addition of 1.25" bronze through hull, ball valves and flush faucet for $ 1500.

A buddy just had a steering cylinder replaced on his Pursuit with twin 275 merc outboards that had to be removed for about the same. So where is the other 2k?

Test, run and evaluate, check fo noise
severice drive
check for water leak in bilge
Reseal and inspect driveshaft upper housing...
R and R U joint ass.
R and R Gimbal bearing ass...
R and R bellows
R and R T/L switch and T/P sensor
Clean bell housing
R and R steering shaft seal
R and R steerin shaft gear
Weld anti-vent plate...this thing was broken...don't really need it, they are charging 3.2 hours.

The hourly rate is $120...does that sound right?
