I am planning a trip down the Hudson from Burlington Vt, to Shelter Island, Ny for a wedding the weekend of Sept. 11th/12th. I was wondering how long a run would be say from Tappen Zee Bridge to Shelter Island via East River /LI Sound? Any other advice will help also! Thanks

You could do it in one long day. If you hug the north shore of LI, there's a long stretch with no place to pull into. You might want to hug the CT side, it'll be a little longer but you'll have places to pull into if needed.

If you fuel up in Glen cove, you should be able to make it all the way to Shelter Island.

I take it a long day would mean on a good day 8 hours with smooth seas? Any suggestions on a marina on Shelter Island?

I'm going the other way end of June. If you PM me after july 4th weekend, I will be able to give you an accurate timeline. Ric

yep, about 8 hours. Never stayed at Shelter Island, only at Greenport which is a stones throw from Shelter. If you have a dink, you can dinghy over. Or there's a ferry right there that goes back and forth all day if you don't find a place on Shelter Island.

It will be a long, long day. I wouldn't recommend doing it in a day. If it is a 2-3 ft waves days, you will be pounded by the time you get there and you don't want to arrive after dark. Come up Long Island Sound. Stop on the north shore when you tire; Oyster Bay, Mattatuck. Arrive at Shelter at noon. Consider West Neck Harbor on Shelter Island ,anchor or marina.

I agree, 1 day isn't going to be too much fun - although you would think it would be since we love boating so much...I just think you'll be sorry if you don't give yourself the cushion - especialy that time of year, you need to keep a day or so on both end just in case. We were in Newport, RI after labor day last year, and spent 3 additional nights due to weather and unfavorable sea conditions.
