Hi everyone
i used to be a regular here on club sea ray so I know if there was a place where someone may know the answer to my engine issue it is here :)
from one day to the next my port engine won't start. I checked the switch and that there is power to the switch from fully charged batteries. So it's neither a switch problem or a power problem. My question is where to look next? Relay for the starter motor maybe? It was starting no problem then bam nothing. There is no click or attempt for the engine to start there is just nothing when you push the start button.

Any advice on where to start looking would be awesome.
Cheers
Robert

Do the gauges come alive? If not check at the starter for a 90A fuse link. Can also check for 12v at the alt output post(orange wire). No voltage could mean the 90A link is bad.

BT Doctor ... Many thanks for the reply and ideas to try. Yes the gauges all come alive ... I just got out from under there looking to see if I could find the fuse you are talking about. The starter motor is on the outboard side and I can't get to the bloody thing. I see the fuse on the starboard engine starter. May have to send a kid in there or something to get to the damned thing. Thanks again for the reply.

You're back? And just in time for our winter! All kidding aside, can't help you with your starting issue, but great to see you back. It looks like you hung on to the 540. I hope all is well!

Creekwood: Nice to hear from you again :) Yes i still have her but probably not for long now... Has been a rough few years hence my disapperance.. She sure is fighting me on maintenance thats for sure! Great to hear from you mate How is everything ? I hope nothing but happy days :)

Villain: Thanks for that, I will give it go this week end when i am next at the boat! Wouldnt that be a treat if it was something so simple!

Endless Seas: / The Bill Collector Relay in the white box on the motor? ANy idea what that relay may be called so i can look into what this part may be on a 540?

Wayne0 : I will look into finding the neutral start switch..it does seem like it will be something simple like this as it was so sudden she was starting fine and then this ....Thank you very much for this bit of advice!

Many thanks to everyone for your insight! This website is great in every way and full of amazing people..it is always a help when you a struggling to find the solution to a problem! Thank you all so very much! I always tell any new boater i meet if you love boating and are not yet on Club Sea Ray you must join !! No really you must!! Thanks again everyone you guys rock!

Robert, hang in there... What doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger. Now, the relay I'm referring to opens the fuel solenoid and your engine would be turning over but not firing.

The Bill collector: thanks for that mate :) I doubt that relay is the problem as I get nothing, no clicks etc..just nothing happens... It really does seem like maybe she got left a bit in gear or the neutral start switch is bad ..as I have power to the gauges..the switch is good ..and it came on so suddenly .the last thing I was doing before the problem was a friend was putting her in and out of gear for a different repair..while I was in the engine room. so I really think it's a great chance it's all to do with that switch and my buddy not putting her properly into neutral before shut down. which would be awesome haha here's hoping!

Somehow I got my wires crossed and thought you had 3126 cats. I'm sorry about the info I mentioned as I really don't know anything about Detroits.
Again I'm sorry,

Tommy

Tommy: Please dont apologise! My bad for not stating i had detroits in my boat, but thank you just the same for trying to help its very much appreciated mate :)

Mike Blake: Yes i have a volt Ohm meter..a few of them, best tool on the boat :)

Thank you very much to everyone that replied here!! It was the neutral start switch, a wire had been knocked off ...Its very nice to have the problem solved so easily! Thank you everyone for the great advice that got my port engine going again :)
