Last year was very bad for barnicles and had to have the boat scraped 3 time by a diver and twice I did it. I have stainless steel shafts and standard props so I would like to konw is ther a paint I can put on them to help keep the barnicles off.

The bottom paint was bad so I will be doing it this spring but don't know what to do about the shafts and props.

Any suggestions????

Thanks

Barry

Had my props coated with "Mussel Buster" powder coating by a local powder coat shop. Was a very big help. When hauled on 11/1 I had no barnacles. I did the shafts, struts, rudders and trim tabs with Pettit metal primer and tie coat primer followed by 2 coats of hard antifouling paint. Also worked well except the rudders. no paint will stay on rudders but barnacles also have a hard time staying on rudders also.

We have been running Prop Speed since 2007 on our running gear replaceing it every two years with good results and have felt it worth the extra cost both in longevity and fuel consumption. You need to use and run the boat as nothing sitting still will hold up by itself IMHO.

Fresh bottom paint is the key. I also use prop speed but fresh is the key. There are many 'magical'solutions that simply do very little but waste money. And as noted, running the boat is the best thing to do to retard growth.

Petit barnacle barrier. Used last two years, worked well. Also used it on trim tabs. $20 a can. Only needed one can.

My bottom including all running gear stays very clean using lot's of gas!:smt021

Thanks for the responces,

I use my boat every other weekend and I do run it. It will be getting a fresh coat of bottom paint this year but wanted something for the running gear. i have used prop speed before on another boat and didnt get the results I felt I should have. I will try the Petit barnacle barrier this time.

Again Thanks..........

Prop Speed must be applied exactly as directed or it won't work. I had it done by the prop guys and it lasted 3 years without a single critter hitching a ride. I will do it this spring so as not to press my luck.

Use "Zinc Coat". Sprayed my props and shafts and they came out clean as a whistle when hauled out. Not a barnacle in sight.

Starting to believe PropSpeed changed their product somewhere along the line. Five years ago several boats in our club got great results lasting up to two years on one vessel, but it just seems like no one is getting results over more than six months now. Thought it could just be bad applications but these boats get serviced up and down the Atlantic side of the Florida Coast.
When I dove my boat, a good application felt like grease underwater, now the treatment appears darker on most applications and isn't slick like it used to be.
A lot of people have just opted for priming and hard antifoulant lately which seems to be out performing PropSpeed, I know there is a new product out that was introduced at the Miami Boat Show that is claiming to out perform PropSpeed for less and without the complex application ... will try to find my notes and post it for all.
I think there is a new antifoulant producer from Europe ?"Boreo"? debuting in America ... curious to see how these products perform given the hype in the advertising.

I used it for the first time in 2012, has a yellow color.
Came out of water barnacle free. Feels sticky.
I'm very happy with Prop Speed!

The first thing I look at when I read this subject is where the boat is used. If your in the NE just cycling your trannies once a week is very effective but here in Florida the hard growth is very tenacious, so much so that barnacles can rip the antifoulant paint right off the hull! Recommended cleaning cycle here in Florida is MONTHLY ... have a client that actually has his 40' Cabo cleaned twice a month ... not because he's vane but because the growth there is on steroids or something and the barnacles actually grow to the size of about an 8th of an inch in just two weeks ... I really thought he was full of Carp at first but even on a FRESH haulout the growth was staggering ... seems like it would be cheaper to put in a lift to me!!!

When we picked up our present boat in Camp Lejeune (brackish water) the bottom hadn't been cleaned in just over a year, the barnacles were sparse and of course the running gear was fouled but no where near what I expected when I dove the boat (damn the water was cold too)
