Well being a new boater and being on the river the first time last year I nailed a wing dam, luckily I was barely moving at the time but the mechanic called and said it will be $1,300.00 to fix the bent prop shaft.

Does that price sound about right?

Assuming you have an Alpha outdrive, then for half of the $1300 you can get a whole new lower unit w/ a three year no fault warranty from SEI. Thats what I did when I fried the gears in my upper.

We're also on the St. Croix - you must have been south of Prescott on the Mississippi when you hit the wing dam? We havent ventured that far south yet in fear of hitting one. Are they well marked? I hope to get down there this summer.

You should get a good river map that shows wing dam locations,we have many in my area[red wing] and most are not marked

What drive do you have?

If Bravo III, what shaft is bent or are both bent?

If it’s a Bravo III with only the inner, longer shaft bent then the price is very competitive. My guess would be they are not including new seals.

If it’s a Alpha 1 then it does sound a bit high and I’d consider another alternative like a drive swap.

I’m not knowledgeable on Bravo I or II drives or inboards. Can’t help you there.

Assuming it’s an outdrive, just my opinion, as long as you are going this far you may as well have installed new seals. Don’t try to save a hundred dollars on a thousand dollar job.

How about damage to the skeg or props?

Are you going to submit a insurance claim or just pay it?

do you have insurance on the boat, it was a coliision, it was an accident? dont be afraid to use insurance when its needed. check your policy....thats what its for.....unless you did it on purpose lol

I believe its an alpha drive on there.

I had the skeg repaired when the mechanic got it back he said your prop shaft is bent and will need repair. I'm selling the boat but I feel I should fix it instead of reduce the price to cover the repair.

We fixed the skeg and prop already do you think insurance will still cover it? Also, we will be upgrading to a Sea Ray soon and will need to insurance out on it, will that hurt us getting insurance on the new boat?

I didn't know Red Wing had unmarked wing dams I will have to get some good river maps for the area. The one we hit was right after Prescott on our way to treasure island marina for the night. First weekend on the river :smt021

Thanks for help I appreciate it. So much to learn:thumbsup:

I would fix the boat. You're not going to get the money you want if it's not ready to go. The discount you will have to give if you don't fix it will probably include not only the fix, but the time, and the "unknowns" about what else might be broken.

Wow. I am normally in sync with Mike. I think this is like tossing $500 in the water.

At $1,300 I’d seriously compare the repair cost to a lower only drive swap.

The drive splits in two about half way up. You can ‘swap’ your damaged lower for another rebuilt lower. Of course this would have made more sense before you repaired the skeg.

I’m not saying to do it, at least get the numbers.

You should be able to get this for not over $800 with shipping. I know nothing of this seller but here is one example:

For $1,400 you can get a brand new SEI drive with a three year warranty.
