Good day folks,
Just picked up my 2nd ever boat! A stressful 10 hour drive from Chicago to Omaha through spring storms and I have a new to me Sundeck 220.

Much larger than my previous runabout, we needed more room for friends and family. The 220 should be about perfect for us.

She definitely needs a cut and polish but should clean up nicely. My primary concern right now is getting it on the water! 2nd place is trying to find a vinyl repair shop who can help me with ripped seams and piping replacement. PO recovered the engine bay seat, poorly, and i’ve got some wear and tear on the front loungers. Any recommendations in Nebraska?

Looking forward to enjoying the sea ray for years to come.

Welcome. I got a great upholstery guy, but if Chicago to Omaha was bad you won’t like Omaha to Baltimore.

It wasn’t necessarily the drive, it was that a 7 hour trip turned into a 10 hour trip due to rain, no covers for sale within 300 miles of our starting point, other shenanigans.

Just pumped approx 28 gallons of water out of the bottom of the hull. Going to let it dry for a bit before turning the key, then it’s fingers crossed.

Pumped? Why not remove the bilge lug?

Tip- talk to RV dealers / shops about upholstery. I find they half the cost of boat oriented places. And same stuff, just today, I ordered new galley faucet from Camping World for way less than marine places wanted.

Brent,
I think you should talk to us about your boat and your boating knowledge.
Wasn’t really our business, but you joined the forum for a reason, so now your business is our business. We take care of each other.

How long did you own your runabout?
Was it an I/O or outboard?
How much mechanical knowledge do you have about this type of boat?
Did your new boat get a professional mechanical inspection or survey?

No insult intended, if taken.
You may be a professional captain/surveyor/mechanic. I don’t know. Just making sure your new boat is ready for the water.

Also, how about a picture!?!?

Got the boat home and parked it in the driveway - Was hoping to get it in the garage but its a bit too tall to clear. Its parked in a way that the water ran towards the front so I pumped from the ski locker. I could have moved it so the water was back in the bilge but with that much water I didn't want to put it back near the engine again. Its dry now.

I'll check with RV dealers about the piping on the seats or repairing them. Thnks for the tip.

Yup - I'm looking for a community and it looks like I found one :)

We only owned the first boat 1/2 season, bought it in June last year due to covid. Quickly found out we needed a bigger boat and well, now we have a bigger boat.
The last boat was I/O Donzi w a 4.3 Merc Alpha 1
Mechanical knowledge - Medium? I've toyed with cars, motorcycles, jetskis - I know enough to get stuff done but I dont know enough to get it done quickly.
New boat professional survey - No, it was hard enough to find the boat and get money down before it sold. We drove to Chicago after buying a boat we'd only seen in pictures o_O

As soon as I figure how to post a pic I will
edit let’s try this

Welcome to Club SeaRay. What part of Nebraska will you be boating in? You will find tons of helpful people on here. Good Luck with your first outing please be safe...

Brent, welcome to CSR and congrats on your new baby.

This is a pretty good place to hang around and the people on here, present company excepted, know a lot about boats and are eager to share their knowledge with you.

Me, I just hang around here for the fun. I have a 13' Boston Whaler and a 35' Monaco. Both are tons of fun.

I'm in Omaha. Lake Manawa is probably home base because its close - Otherwise Branched Oak in Lincoln or Fremont Lakes, although I'm not a big fan of the racetrack (The lake is an oval with an island in the middle. At any given point the width is probably 100')

Lighter note, everything I know about Nebraska I learned from Dances With Wolves and I didn’t see much boating there. Even Kickapoo didn’t have a canoe.

Welcome! You will like the 220. I have a 2003 and it’s a great Lake boat, not too big not too small.

Ok. So we know a little more. Now, since you say you did not have time to get a pre-purchase mechanical inspection, and you are generally mechanically knowledgeable but not particularly knowledgeable on boating mechanics, let’s get this boat safe and mechanically sound for you and your family.

To the other forum members, why don’t you guys that know more than me help him with some basic inspection items.

1. If I/O, Bellows. Age/condition unknown.
2. Electrical connections. Wiring on an old boat can be jacked up. Connections for bilge blower and bilge pump needs to be inspected for spark proof connections. I have found twisted wires with electrical tape for bilge blowers before. Not good in the engine room!
3. If I/O, Exhaust manifolds. Signs of age to prevent catastrophic engine damage.
4. Fire suppression/prevention. Fuel fill hose, fuel tank vent hose, fuel line inspection. Are clamps double and rust free? Is hose cracking? Any signs of leaks? Fire extinguishers? Number, size, date, age?
5. Transom sealant items such as screw holes, garboard drain, through hulls?
6. Trailering. Date code on tires? Last time axles were re-packed with new seals?
7. Trailer brakes functioning?
8. I/O or outboard, water impeller and lower unit oil? Last changed?

What am I missing?

Thanks for the checklist.
I’ll take a look over the next couple days.

Trailer is brand new, had never been used. I think it’s trailmaster brand. PO got a new trailer last year when winterized and sold his boat to upgrade before this season.

Good deal on the trailer. Often overlooked but losing a wheel bearing or a blowout can ruin a boating trip.

As far as the other stuff, if you are handy with a wrench, you can you tube those things. If I can do them I assure you they can’t be too complicated.

How about some pictures or your new boat?
Here’s my 280 and 220.

I tried to post a pic using the img icon above, didn’t work.

Maybe upload is the best option?

Nice looking boat from the outside. My wife and I just purchased a 2001 SeaRay 190SD, yet to be in the water. I replaced master cylinder on trailer, then a few steel lines, then one wheel cylinder was leaking, so I’m replacing both. I’m a farmer and have to fix my trailer, in my spare time. It’s planting season, so I’m busy, but supposed to be major weather events the next 4-5 days, so I may get time to finish upgrading brakes on trailer. Good Luck
Jim
