Questions about repossessed boats

Bought my boat 3 seasons ago as a repo from Commonwealth Boat Brokers in Richmond Virginia.

Now that is one beautiful 1988 boat!! Classy...

Scott, sounds like a great deal! I may have to look these guys up. Hope it works out!

...A little OT but we looked at a boat a few months ago, had been for sale for 2+ years, priced at $199K. It's brokered but we looked at it through the owner. We met him at the docks, chatted for a while, one of those "which boat is yours" conversations, and he invited us to look at his boat. As he put it "when she sells she sells".

I was searching YachtWorld today and saw the price was dropped to $149,000. It's a fantastic boat, just not our style. A 25% price drop...

Might one ask what type of boat and year it was e.g. 1999 370DA, 1998 40DA, 2001 40 DB etc.

Thanks

1983 Viking 46 Convertible. We were docked near the boat this summer. One night a guy was walking around the docks and we struck up a conversation. 20+ minutes later I asked him if he had a boat at the marina. He said he did, pointed his out, on the "For Sale" dock and asked if I wanted to see her. He was not trying to sell her to me then...I could tell he was a proud owner and even question why he was selling. I had never been on a Viking so I took him up on it.

It's a fantastic boat, Gary may know her, just not our style.

Scott, Hope all turns out well for you w/the survey. Who you using? Congrats on the quick sale of your boat. Say hi to Jeff (if it's Harrison Marine) your getting your new one from-he's a buddy of mine. Sounds exciting-it's all good!

Thanks Pete. Survey went well, had Darryl Campbell do it based on your advice (he said hi). Had Dave Blaz do the engine review. These guys are both very good. Thanks for the help.

Scott

SB in Gp,

Congrats! When is the maiden voyage? Naming ceremony?

were you able to get a well at the pier park?

Gregg

congrats sb (and great boat name!)
i dont think anyone addressed the salt water issue, but in a boat that lightly used, it's not anything to even be concerned about, esp in a FWC boat. if there were salt related problems, the surveyor would have picked up on it. rest easy and enjoy your deal of a lifetime!

Thank you. Probably won't have possession until next weekend. Hopefully we'll have her in the water then. We'll only have a few weeks before pulling for the season. She'll be renamed "Pier Pressure II" in a quiet ceremony next spring.

Already planning the great North Channel trip now that I have a genny. Boats are fun.

Scott,

Time to change your signature.

enjoy it while you can. it is disheartening that the season is almost over!

Congrats on the boat. We love our 320 we upgraded from a 260

Congrats Scott....let's see some pictures before you shrinkwrap her

Picked her up on Saturday, spent about 3 hours with the boat before dark. Had to mount 4 new batteries, boy that is not an easy job with the tight bilge on a 320.

Had to leave town for a week, so she is still very dirty. I'll try to get some pictures after a good cleanup this weekend.

Pete and LauCo I'm in slip 53. Stop by if you're around this weekend.

SB, we will be around this weekend, I'm just down in 60.... I think I saw it, backed into the slip, named Sea Breeze I think? She's gorgeous! Congratulations. We will be there this weekend, in between birthday parties and hockey practice.
Congrats again, she is beautiful!

Thought I'd give you all an update on this experience.

The boat is beautiful and has cleaned up very nice. The canvas was not as bad as I first thought, just need to replace the glass. The interior is perfect, most things never used. Thank goodness Searay's seal so well, it still smells like new.

The financial transaction went smoothly. The repo dealer was efficient and helpful (even saved me from a major problem - see below).

Near as I can figure this boat was winterized and stored outside on blocks at the end of the '06 season (in NJ) and did not leave land or get cleaned until this year. So you have the expected wear and grime from sitting for over a year.

I had it fully surveyed and had an engine mechanic do an inspection. Came through with flying colors. No issues, except for minor prop damage, a few scrapes and dock bites that I'm going to repair this winter.

I had to put new batteries in it (batteries were missing), after speaking with my engine mechanic, went with Costco batteries (Deep Cycle, Group 28, CCA 780) that were slightly lower spec than the manual called for. The batteries called for in the manual (Group 31, CCA 800) were not available at a reasonable price anywhere in my area (I checked Costco, Sams, Walmart, Kmart). West Marine had them for $250 each, and I paid $69 at Costco, no brainer.

When I launched the boat at the repo dealer, the dealer stayed more than an hour after closing while I mounted the batteries. We dropped her in the sling and set it in the water and fired her up. Ran perfectly (as it did during inspection). Ran for about a minute, when the repo guy yelled "shut her down". He noticed that not enough water was coming from the exhaust. I had not opened the water intake seacocks! Wow, he saved me a potential major problem, as I would have driven off like that. My previous boat did not have seacocks and with everything going on, it completely slipped my mind. It did not get warm enough to cause any engine damage, but I'll change out the impellers this winter just in case, but it is cooling fine now.

Everything, so far, on the boats works. The only issue I'm experience is a slight vibration that seems to be coming from the starboard side during 3000+ RPM. I think that it is due to some minor prop damage (both props had a .5 inch flat spot on one fin). I am going to have my engine guy take a ride with me next week to help diagnose before we haul for the winter. This issue would not have deterred me from buying the boat, because I believe (hope) it is minor. I'll have the props reconditioned this winter.

I thought it was missing the main cabin TV, but at closing the repo dealer produced a flat-screen (Digital) TV and said that they had stored it so that it didn't walk away.

The only thing about this experience that was unsettling was the fact that they would not allow me to seatrial the boat. We had to do all the inspections on land. Their excuse was that they had too many boats coming and going and didn't have time for launching and hauling all the time. I believe that the real reason is that they don't want to deal with the inevitable issues that come from seatrial.

I'll get some more pictures posted soon. Had a problem with my camera, so I lost most of the exterior photos I took.

Great looking boat! Best of luck to you. First thing you should do each and every time you start up an inboard is go and check the flow. You'll probably never forget that step again!

Regarding Question #3, I would not want to purchase a repo boat where the former owner, who is pissed off, would be close by. Move it away and that makes the whole transaction easier. Just my thoughts.
