Quick Battery Poll Please

As far as I can remember, when it has been discussed here in the past, the charger incompatibility issues were with GEL batteries, not AGM.

I think the old chargers can charge AGMs.... but the newer generation of chargers include different charging profiles that designed to help improve the life of AGMs (and other type batteries using the specific charging profiles). Most new chargers have profiles for Lead Acid, Gel, AGM, etc. Its not that the older chargers wont accomplish the recharging task, but newer chargers may work and maintain the battery "better". ***Note... Individual users left to interpret marketing materials and charger claims individually.***

Hey,

Thanks for the info. I have ended up putting in two AGM's for the house batteries and one 'No Maintenance' Start battery. All up from the 27 to 31's.

The charger I have (good point by the way) has a switch on it for AGM or Standard. I was concerned about mixing the batteries and the result but the tech doing the install and his contact for the batteries themselves agreed that the mixed battery setup will be ok. He had to leave it in the standard setting... I dont remember the tech behind it as he was quoting numbers with regards to voltage acceptance by the batteries. Essentially he ensured me that the main thing was that the AGM's will take longer for that last 5% of trickle charge at the end but all will be ok. Essentially this makes sense as the battery charger/conditioner is only in use with the generator or shore power so I figured the last 5% would likely not be a show stopper for me.

Anyway, I ended up going with the Discover/Battery Direct batteries which are commercial grade batteries but which I am 'investing' in for comfort when away from home.
