quiet engine room blower

since i don't know your boating experience level i will make the assumption from your low number of post that you are new to boating....normally you only run the bilge blower for a couple mins prior to starting the engine...this is to purge any gas fumes that may have accumulated in the engine compartment....once this purge is complete and the engine is started there is no need to continue to run the bilge blower....the vents in the engine compartment will allow for fresh air to naturally circulate into the compartment and keep gas fumes vented out as the boat moves forward....the engine heats the air in the compartment as it runs so the vents allow the heated air to escape too.....if you don't want to run the bilge blower before you start the engine you can accomplish the same thing by simply raising the engine compartment cover for a couple mins and let the compartment vent naturally....if you find yourself needing to run the engine at idle speed for a long period of time it is a good idea to run the bilge blower because the natural ventilation of the engine compartment will be reduced since the boat is not moving very fast if at all...

What is the issue now? Is the blower bearing squealing or do you think it's just too loud? Mine was squealing a couple years ago and I just replaced it with the same brand.
It's an Attwood. Jim the owner of this site, sells them here:

I replaced my old noisy bilge blower with a Rule 240 4". It is now probably 80% quieter than the old one was.

I replace mine with Jabsco continuous squirrel cage blowers. During the summer time I run them all day. The only thing is that you can not run both blowers with the present switch on the console because of the high amp. I had to build a relay (2) bank and use the switch to activate the relays (30 amp auto relay). I put them in 08 and they still are running strong. The only thing you hear is the air coming out the vents. I also in incoorporate on my new dash two leds that monitor them so I will know if one goes out.

Cliff I would tend to disagree.

Always run your blowers for at least 4 minutes prior to any starting. If you are just idling or/and are not at cruise speed, you should always run your blowers as the vents will not provide adequate ventilation.

That being said, my blowers are loud too and sounds like a jet plane....:wow:

I had a squealing blower - very noisy but worked. What happens is the bearing wears out and the fan doesn't spin true and it rubs on the housing, creating the squeal. It eventually died and I replaced it with one that matched the port side (can't remember which brand). It was noisy but not squealing.

i don't think we disagree.....we both said to run the blowers a few mins before starting the engine....the longer the purge cycle the better... and we both agree to run the blower at idle speed.....

great minds think alike.....

Mine were very noisy but it was the fan hitting the sides of the housing.. now you cannot hear them at all. mine would kick the breaker if the boat was rafted off. my new ones are great I had to check by raising the hatch to see if they were actually working my new ones are so quiet.

OK so what kind are they?

Mine just sounds like a bathroom vent fan. My slip neighbor's on the other hand sounds like a love sick moose.
