I don't know if this has been posted so if it has....moderators....please delete.

In the Barnegat Bay area, you can use channel 27 to access Sea Tow's automated radio check service. What it does is, it allows you to check your radio 24 hrs a day and not have to hope someone answers.

Step 1- Put Radio on Ch 27
Step 2- Say Radio Check 3 times
Step 3- Stand by for the automated reply

That's it. You will hear a msg from Sea Tow Central NJ as well as a recording of your radio check. This used to be the Marine Operator channel.

Try it...it works..

Nice! Thanks for posting, Dom. I wish they make more announcemnts on this, for example when CG responds to radio checks on 16, they can advise to use ch27 like they advise to use ch9.

Almost every idiot on Barnegat Bay has to check his radio 5 times a day..... I cringe when I hear "you got your ears on".......Maybe I am sensitive because I was an avation radio operator in the Navy and proper protocol was demanded.....Or..... maybe I am just cranky!

"Cranky Ol' Airdale Sparky"!

Thanks for the Heads Up.. Dom!

I think most places are going to the radio check on 26,27 or 28. I was recently in Ft. Lauderdale and someone did a radio check on 16, the CG came on scolding him that 16 is used for hailing and emergencies only and all radio transmissions were being recorded and if continued use for radio check a fine is the penalty. Right after someone came on and told the unsuspecting captain to use 26 for his radio check. First time I have ever heard the CG get upset so quickly for a radio check.

They have just implemented that same system in Daytona and Cape Canaveral, 26 and 28 respectfully.

Here in Jersey Ch. 24 for Silver Bay, Metedeconk area. Ch. 27 for Barnegat Light area, Ch 26 for Beach Haven, Atlantic City area.

Does the CG get upset if you just call them and ask what time it is? Close enough to a radio check...
