I noticed rat droppings in our cabin area. Not sure how they get in or how to get them out. Kind of gross. Any suggestions?

traps. only way to be sure they are out and dead. if you use poison they could still be in but decaying. they could also get out and if you have a dog that is like mine and would eat the dead rat...poisoned dog.

You could use the time honored method, combining a liberal amount of cheddar cheese bits and peanut butter. Sneak over and place dabs of yummy rat food quietly around and on your neighbors boat, just before you are ready to splash yours;0) Seriously, go with traps. Take any food the rats could get into off the boat. Be sure the pantry and fridge are super clean. Rats love clutter, so this would be a good time to reorganize and get all that crap you never use moved to the shed. I agree Rat poison on a boat is not a good option.

My house is surrounded by fields so I'm in a constant battle with them. A co-worker let me borrow this contraption called a ratinator. It basically zaps them. Way less mess and seemed to work really well. I just bought my own (he had the smaller version). One thing to note is when baiting them try to use whatever they found as a food source. I've had good luck with peanut butter.

Good luck with whatever method you choose! I freaking hate mice.

They hate mothballs. Try to trap them and then put some mothballs around in some nylons when you winterize at the end of the season. Works great for me anyway. +1 on the peanut butter bait.

+1 on the mothballs once you trap them. Other than your boat smelling like my Grandmas closet for a month they do the trick.

At our previous marina we had rats go in the ER of one boat and went to work on the electrical insulation. $10K plus in damage I was told. I seal any foot level openings with towels when we leave the boat, and this worked for me.

The Navy is developing a new Rail Gun, but like the Duck Commander solution, it would really put a damper on the boating season.

+1 on mothballs. They actually work on a lot of critters including moths.

Not sure if they are still there. I found the droppings while cleaning it out right before winterizing. I just want to know how that could've happened and how I can prevent that in the future. I don't think those same rats could still possibly be on the boat.

Remove the drain plug. Rats always leave a sinking ship.

Love it.

We live opposite the bush, forever fighting the bast*****s in our roof. Apparantley I'm not allowed to lock our 2 cats in there.

Tried the electronic ultrasonic scarers, they worked as attractors. So now I bait the roof every few months, (don't recommend that for the boat for the same reasons others have posted). It is a pain in the ar***e when they don't leave the roof to die. Normally takes me a few days until I can no longer put up with the smell and have to climb up there in my Dexter outfit to remove them.

Has me totally bamboozled, we have pink batt insulation in the roof, which itches like frickin crazy, yet they nest in it!

I had the same problems. And I learned the hard way not to poison them. Luckily I found one in a hold in the galley. But after that I bought this little thing at Walmart that you plug in and it emits a tone that rats can not deal with. Never had a problem again. Cheap fix but it worked

There the things I put in our roof, trouble is I think they forgot to change the frequency for Australia. Our rats liked them!

Sounds like it is time for the Pied Piper...

I dated a gal that had a nasty azz rat in her pants. :smt021

We drove a mouse infestation away with moth balls in our condo building.

We use dryer sheets. I had mice in one of my boats when using mothballs and the smell from them drove me out of the boat. No problems since, it may be dumb luck. Someone told me they use dryer sheets in there camper so I gave it a try. Three years, all good.
