I think I've traced the source of my oil leak to my remote oil filter. Looking back through the forums it looks like this is a common issue. My question is how is the adapter plate (#10) attached to the engine block?

I can turn #10 fairly easily by hand. I'm thinking it should be a little tighter. How? Is it held in place with #13?

I'm also thinking that the hoses #8 and #9 may be leaking.

I would like to fix what I have before I just buy a whole new kit and start over.

Anyone been here before?

I was in a similar spot - one hose leaking on one engine and the adapter plate leaking on the other. Tried a new gasket on the adapter plate and it would still leak. It's not that difficult to just get down there and change out the filter so I eliminated mine. I had to remove #13 in the picture above to get the adapter plate off and then I replaced #14 with the normal filter stud which I happen to already have on hand. If you are planning to repair then just remove #13 and save everything you take off. A lot of times the local parts houses can make custom hoses - just make sure they know it's for a remote oil system so they know what type of hose to use.

Remove #9 hose and unscrew #13.
(You won't loose that much oil but, have plenty of rags on hand).
This will allow #10 to drop down and you can check #11 which looks like a normal rubber filter gasket.
You could prob. Just tighten #13 to put a little more pressure on the gasket.

I was wondering about #13. I wasn't sure if it could be tightened more or if it bottoms out at a certain point and stops. It would have to seal. #9 screws into it.

#13 screws on to #14 and holds on #10 (the adaptor housing).
I only know because, I just installed mine on new engines.
:)

Does 13 screw down until it bottoms out, or is it like a compression type of deal? Stop tightening when it's tight enough?

Tighten until its just beyond snug.
It doesn't bottom out (least mine didn't).

Thank you. That's what I'm looking for.

Ill try to wiggle in there and tighten them down a little more.

You don't happen to know the size of the nut do you?

Update:

I replaced 8,9,11 and 12.

Upon further inspection it looked like the hoses may have been leaking. I'm not certain. The gaskets, 11 and 12, were stiff and a bit dry. 13 was loose and 10 could be moved fairly easily by hand. I might have been able to correct the problem simply by tightening 13.

I decided to just replace it all and be certain it was fixed. My time was the most valuable commodity here. The parts cost right around $300. Maybe I didn't need to replace all that stuff but I don't see it hurting.

The end result is an oil free bilge. I'm happy.

The last thing I wanted was to have to climb back in there and turn more wrenches. I did it all in one shot.
