I'd like to remove the 24y/o but it seems like it's going to be slow and tedious. Has any one found an east way to do this?

If it is a decal. two ways work for me. A good heat gun with a spackle knife { slightly dull } .
also MMM makes decal remover. It's in a spray can, a little expensive but works well.

"MMM" is the company called "3M".

I suggest you start another thread for your second question (you don't want to be a "hijacker"), or better yet, first try doing a search.

I just removed the boot strips on a 34' Sea Ray. I use Zip Strip, gel to remove the strip. Its a two step procedure. First will remove the actual color. Second to remove the glue. Use a plastic Bondo spreader. Wash with water after each application. Work in 4-6 foor lengths. I didn't have any problems with the gelcoat. Buffed it afterwards and it looks great. DO NOT USE RAZOR BLADES OR METAL SCRAPER.

the local sign guy gave me a rubber wheel that goes on the end of a drill.. you have to use low speed otherwise it will melt the strips to the fiberglass... i will take a pic of it and post it... you still have to use the plastic putty knife also... but it does help take care of the bulk...

First post guys!

I just took all of the stripes off my '87 weekender. I used a craftsman heatgun and a plastic razor blade. 2 people needed. One person heats up the stripe about 8 inces ahead of the person doing the slow pulling. Most of my stripes came off in big pieces. Barely left anything on the gelcoat to worry about. I used a citrus solution to clean up after. Worked great. Of course now you can see the color difference where the stripe use to be. I'm still looking for someone that will give me a good price on a vinyl graphics boat wrap.

I picked up a product maybe 3m at my auto body supply shop, it was called an eraser ( decal remover) worked great on my 30 footer as I removed all decal striping and installed new. It worked best on my air drill
Good luck its worth it in the end

The previous owner of my 30 DA accidentally did it with a pressure washer. He removed the whole stripe ahead of the wide windows! DOH!!!

You can see the stripe on either side of the arch, but it's missing forward of the window:

Heat gun - the only way to go. Then some cleaner as others suggested to clean up the left behind adhesive.

After reading this thread and the others just like it I decided to do a comparison when removing my 21 Yr old stripes. Mine were the Burgundy lower with the very feminine looking pinkish just above. I decided to try the heat gun as I had great success with this when removing the name on the back last year. Seems that it all depends on the age of the stripe. I started with the heat gun and tried different methods. 1) heat the stripe ahead of time in large sections to release the glue and pull slowly 2) heat about 8" ahead and pull and move the gun as I pulled. Neither one of these worked very effectively. Most of the glue stayed behind and the slightest bit of extra heat caused the very thin stripe to break off. Also at each crack you had to start a new "pull".
Next I tried the Astro Pneumatic smart eraser (I believe 3M has same product) it is made to fit on a threaded arbor 3K-4K RPM.

I made an arbor to fit my electric drill (0-3K RPM) and went to work. following the directions I got a nice 60deg cone worked into the side of the pad per the instructions and worked it up and down the side of the stripe. Took the stripe and glue very quickly. If you use the end too much it ends up pushing the melted color back into the gelcoat and you get a (insert boot stripe color here) mess. I'm going to go back with acetone to clean, and wetsand the area to make a nice surface for the stripe to adhere to. I'll post pics of the finished product.
