Replacing the original cockpit speakers in my '05 340. I know the size in terms of depth, etc. (not cutting any new holes!). Anyone know what the standard stereo system power rating (watts per channel) is? Different speakers of the same size (going with either JL or Fusion) have different watt recommendations for power handling capacities. Can't find it in owners or parts manuals.

You probably have 6.5" Coax in the cockpit like most of us. The JL MX650-CCX-CG-WH(white) are likely exactly what you're looking for. However, it's very possible that the arch isn't quite deep enough to replace your stockers with these, and you'll need to get some 1/2" spacers.

Something like this will work fine. Exactly what I had to do when I replaced the dry rotted Clarions in mine

There are two versions of this speaker. One at about $200/pair rated for 60 watts/channel. The other exact same model number is about $400/pair rated for 75 watts. JL states that with the higher rated set, although they will work with units as low as 20 watts/channel, they recommend a head unit/amplifier that can consistently produce 75 watts. That's why I am tying to determine what the power rating for the stock amplifier is. AND are the more expensive speakers going to sound any better anyway?

It's extremely likely that we have the same amplifiers in our boats. I tried both sets on mine, since West had them in stock only a few hundred feet away from where I was docked when I bought the boat. I've got no problems spending money on sound equipment, but the difference just wasn't there for me.

Excellent, just what I needed to know. They'd have to be darn fine sounding speakers to justify twice the price.

No problem. Those spacers are key though. If you want to get blingy there are companies that offer LED versions.

Dont sweat the speakers advertised watts rms and peak. concentrate on a speaker that fits.

JL offers two 6.5" speakers. The mid level MX series and the upper level M series. No where near the same speakers. Quite a bit of difference beyond 15 watt rms. The mid level MX is actually a better sounding in-boat speaker of those two. its a perfect replacement for those driving off the head unit or with a moderate external amp.

Blingy versions of spacers.

Nice. Adding to the winter project list.

Bracketracer,

And so begins the slippery slope....

LOL. Considering all of the electronics and gear are all original on mine, it's more like a cliff :)

But I knew this going in, and got a smoking deal on the boat, so I'm good...I hope

Glad to hear that hat the mid level is better sounding. I was not prepared to plunk down $800 for 2 sets of speakers for a boat! Good sound is appreciated, but I here are limits

So after the holidays I went wiwith the Jl Mx-650 speakers. Bought spacers just in case, went to put them in. Not sure how the covers/faceplate comes off the old ones. Tried twisting, pulling , prying but they didn' seem to want to come off. They "wiggled". It I decided to stop before I broke or damaged something and seek advice from anyone whose removed them. Not in a rush so better to do it right rather than my usual method when I get frustrated..... pull/pry until something gives (unfortunately not always what is supposed to). Advice?

I'm in the same boat here, pun intended.
Just bought the polk 6.5 and not sure how to get the old grill cover off ?

Anyone want to chime in on the removal of the stock Speaker grill cover? I want to grab and twist, seems like that's how it should be, but don't want to ham fist it.
I've 2 pairs of Polk's awaiting a hopefully drop-in install..

I don't recall if it's counter or clock but grab at the 10 and 4 position and press together while twisting.

Are they twist off? I can’t figure out how to remove the grill covers

Also after we hear how to take the covers off... As I'm about to do the same on my 340.... I'm also adding a fusion radio to the package. Has anyone added a Sub? How hard was it to run the wires and what kinda amp did they use?

The stock speakers are Panasonic brand. Pretty cheap so I’m glad I’m upgrading. They do twist off but I couldn’t twist them off so I used a panel removal tool to snap them off.

Similarly, I need to remove the starboard speaker on my Sea Ray 268 radar arch for radar cable installation access. The grill does not seem to turn - and there is no tab on the bottom.
Should I just pry the grill off?
