After hearing a loud bang, the motor shutting down and leaving myself and my family stranded last season, I had to be towed in by Sea Tow. Wow that was fun. I finally got around to replacing the lower outdrive after learning it was locked up and that somthing let go at the end of last season. I found a replacement Alpha outdrive with the correct gears in a local boat with a blown motor that only had been sitting for three months. I purchased it for $650.00 and just installed it in between the rain drops here on the east coast.

My question is should I have used gasket sealant along with the new gasket. As of now I haven't dunked her yet so it could be corrected. after reading the instructions and going over the steps, I noticed it didn't mention it. I know it wouldn't hurt but don't really want to pull it apart if it's not really needed.

Just your thoughts and any suggestions,

John

A new gasket is all that is required. The gasket mates the bell housing to the drive. Hopefully you gave the bellows a once over for signs of age while the drive was off.

For future reference, for 400 bucks more, you could get a NEW SEI drive with 3 years no questions asked warranty. I don't work for them but am very happy with there drive.

Good luck and welcome!.

Sorry I do not know the answer to your question.

With the Bravo III drive when you pull it for service you do not apply gasket sealant before you put it back on.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind if I need to do it again. I didn't know.

I did inspect the gimbal bearing and it was very smooth. the bellows also looked very good. It was replace 2 years ago. I did not check the alignment but I think I will be OK.
