Does anyone know if you can reset the digital hourmeter that is part of the analog tachometer on a 2001 410 Dancer? I just had the engines long-blocked and would like to reset the hour meters to zero if possible.

I would add a secondary hour meter ($30 ea. and wiring is easy) on the engines themselves for this purpose so you have a record of both the engine time and the total time if you don't have a log book that records your boat's history.

I am told the tachs can be disassembled by Teleflex technicians and the hour meters set to a different time. Considering the labor involved to remove and reinstall them, you'd be money ahead to just replace the tachs with new ones.......new tachs are about $185 ea.

In computer controlled engines, the hours are usually recorded in the computers and shown in the tachs, and not driven by the tachs themelves. That is the way modern cars are, and my 2004 Monterey 265 was the same. In other words, digital hour meters in tachs would need a reset in the computer and not the tach itself. The digital read-out of the tach is only a read-out of the computer hours. Check on the year though..... I know this chaged back in the mid 90's for most compiterized systems.

Just an observation.

And by the way, I would not change a thing either. Just add the secondary hour meters for proper representation of both engines and vessel hours..... Best of both worlds......

On Searay boats engine hours are stored inside ECM and can't (maybe motorola can) be changed. On tachs with digital hour-meter hours are stored inside gauge and may differ from reading from computer. This hour-meter "start clicking" when ignition switch is "on". Also - you can't reset those.

2001 7.4 EFI engines use GM's MEFI-3 processor, not the Motorola one with Mercury's Smartcraft software. Hours can be read from the MEFI-3 but I do not know of a tool that will reset that value.

Best regards,

Thanks to everyone.

I know the ECM can be read with the Mercruiser Scan Tool and the ECM keeps track of the hours. I do not know if the ECM can be reset.

The motors were just swapped out. My hourmeters are digital in the tachs. I was most interested in resetting them to match the zero hours on the engines.

Just log-in the hours at transition. The hour meter is akin to an odometer, so it may or may not be legal to reset the meter, but it is better to leave it as-is si it continues to accumulate totalized hours.

It is fine to reset the meter when swapping the entire boat for an entire new boat...

I realize this is an old thread, but since I am swapping out long blocks also, I was still wanting to have the hour meters reset. Any new ideas on this since 2008?

Depends on the ECM.

If you are keeping the MEFI-4 ECM which I assuming you had before, your hours will be stored in the Teleflex gauges that frank commented earlier in the thread on. If the engines have the newer ECM-555 (MPI engines) the hours are stored in the ECM. So I guess the question is, are you changing your ECM when you repower and are you changing your gauges to Smartcraft if you go MPI? Now that I think about it, I think the MEFI-4 stores hours too but I will have to check on that. Either way, there are a couple of factors at play here.
