I know that this has been discussed before. But I'd like to revisit, and see if anyone has updated suggestions.

As many of you know, that darn black backing on the carpeting dries and flakes away.
Trying to revitalize the carpets, before deciding to replace them with new carpets or even the more expensive NuTeak-like products.

Anyone have any ideas for backing?
I have heard some use the rubberized-type paint.
But I am concerned it would seep through to the carpet side. Also concerned that the black rubber paint would transfer color to the deck.

A few years back, someone posted that they bought and cut EcoFoam from Home Depot, and placed it under their carpets.

Any suggests, old or new, would be appreciated.

Thanks much!

I put the thin floating floor underlayment under my carpets. Protects the non-skid great and gives a nice padded feel to the carpet. http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/50993-common-problem-for-us-!!?p=574502#post574502

I did both. I coated the back with black Plastikote and cut out EVA pads that go under the carpets. Worked like a top. Still some flaking, but it rinses off and my feet appreciate the softer underlayment. Probably bought me two to three years extra use from the carpets.

I did the Plastikote thing as well and that worked just fine, no issue with future flaking or color transfer to the non-skid. But I will say that I only used it for one season before the Admiral wanted new carpet anyway so I don't have any long-term use data.

Same here.. the plastikote (two coats) worked fine - smells terrible so don't do it in your basement. Ended-up ordering bulk marine carpet and cutting/binding replacement pieces anyway.

yea i did two coats as well and dear-sweet-Jesus that stuff smells.

Agree with all. In addition, try using WoodyWax in cockpit non-skid as that helps as well. Combined, this will likely give you another 1-2 years on carpet. BTW, the new carpet backing (ribbed) is much better and longer lasting.
