Rudder Angle working on SC5000 but not on new Garmin 8612

did this ever get resolved? im going to be upgrading my SC5000 smartcraft to a vesselview 502 and honestly i use my rudder indicator everytime I dock.

I had rudder angle on my vesselview 7 and now have it on my vesselview 703. As long as your information is on the smartcraft network I would think it is all about the source setting.

The Actisense NGT-1 also will do the job quite well. They have a free NMEA Reader application that will display all of the fields in the PGN as well.

I have all three mentioned here (YDNR-02, IPG100, NGT-1), the Maretron is very useful and works great but the Actisense is more comprehensive. The Yacht Device isn't bad in a pinch but doesn't break out the fields like the Actisense does.

Do any of the three allow you to configure devices, ie: instance, name, offset, etc?

Instance and Installation name can be done by any. But device specific parameters usually need to be handled by the manufacturer devices. Meaning your asking about rudder offset, if that is supported then somewhere in the auto pilot will have that parameter. Rudder sender's are usually not stand-alone and need to be connected to an auto-pilot or an NMEA converter that supports rudders.

Thanks for much for your quick reply. I am finding there is nothing standard about the NMEA 2000 standard.

There is, but it isn't always intuitive. Most, if not all, rudder sensors require an interface of some sort. They are not stand alone N2K sensors. This device from Yacht Devices is a rudder sender interface and will convert the info to N2K data and I believe can be edited.

The 127245 Rudder PGN does not support offset.

127245 Rudder fields:
1 Rudder Instance
2 Direction Order
3 Reserved Bits
4 Angle Order
5 Position
6 Reserved Bits

So here is where I am...

My boat has Raymarine Axiom MFDs on a SeatalkNG network. I have Yacht Devices gateways on each engine, so I have lome limited engine data on the network (N2K). I also have Bennett AutoTrim with N2K output. Of course the Axiom will not display the trim tabs correctly because there is no way to calibrate them. To fix that issue I purchased a used Lowrance LMF-200, which should (still untested) calibrate the trim tabs and make it play nice with the Axioms. Now I want rudder angle to display. I think I have 2 options. Option 1 id to install a Raymarine autopilot with a rudder transducer which will act as a gateway to the N2K network. Option 2 would be just to install the rudder transducer and a Yacht Devices rudder gateway. Next I will tackle fuel flow senders LOL, likely Lowrance so I can use the LMF-200 to calibrate etc. My original question was really..... would PC software replace having to use the LMF-200 for all this.
