I need to replace a rudder on my boat. One has to be made and it is expensive close to 3k. I found a pair of rudders on eBay. They are not a direct match and the dimensions are not the same. I think it could work.

The upper shaft is 3/4" longer but there is usually room for that. The length of the bronze is also slightly longer but not as wide. This is simply a later version which give me about the same amount (square inches) of surface area. I can a matching pair of rudders for about 2k.

The important dimension is the shaft. Just make sure it will fit the stuffing box and linkage. Slightly longer and less width of the rudder blade won’t make a difference.

You can always get a local machine shop to trim the shaft if that presents a problem.

Are you replacing 1 or 2.

I wonder if just replacing 1, with different dimensions would affect performance.

The rudders on SR boats are slightly toed in behind the posts. Probably to eliminate instability. I would think that different port and stbd rudders would present different drag and adversely affect the handling.
