Came to a realization last season that 75% of our fire extinguishers onboard are all hidden behind a door. If I had to direct a passenger outside of our crew to grab a fire extinguisher there is no way they would find one. Regardless of reviewing safety items with passengers I'm still doubtful they retain much aside from where their life vests are located. Our crew review our emergency procedures at the start of every season but in an emergency locating safety gear shouldn't take much thought. Because of this I purchased these stickers and placed them at the location of each extinguisher. We have 4 on board and 3 are in closets and in cabinets. Seemed like a not brainer. Just passing it along as useful idea that hopefully will never be needed but could give someone a fighting chance in a bad situation.

I think those stickers are a good idea and, if placed in a low area on the door they would not be offensive.
Yup, I added any areas where they are not in your face but you can recall seeing them.

That's a great idea and surprised it's not a law somewhere, like the discharge plaque is.

Omg….. we don’t need more damn stickers

My engines and fuel tanks are directly under the salon. If I am doing maintenance and it is open I generally have an extinguisher nearby. If there is a fire underneath and everyone is outside, I am having everyone go to the dingy. Not sending anyone below. I do have an extinguisher on the flybridge for anything on the outside. Just my thoughts

Just pointing out the obvious. Like we really need that no discharge plaque or the black water one ...

Curious if have ever been in a life threatening situation on a boat? Or one with paying customers that you were in charge of? If you ever were you would change your mind on that one.

That said, I more or less agree with your anecdotal pic. Some people you just can't reach ...

Ha ha funny

The last thing I’m doing in a life threatening situation is reading stickers

Here’s a good one on the new machine I just got….. I’m actually running it right now ….. This one cracks me up….. that’s why it’s still there :)

When I was in corporate we were touring a glass making factory looking for best practices….. Safety was over the top. We had to watch a video, sign a waiver….. basically don’t touch the glass….. go out into the plant and there were a million signs no lie …. That said don’t touch the glass. We are watching one process and our CEO one of the smartest men I know…. Reach’s down and touches the edge of the glass….. cut deep like a razor blade. I’m telling you signs don’t work. Not even on a McDonalds Coffee….. the signs are there for liability nothing more

See no…. Here is an example in my shop. I just took right now

Fire code says I need a sign above an extinguisher so many feet off the ground….. and an extinguisher so many feet off the ground. Why?
If you are in a panic mode you are looking for an exit door. If you are casually looking for an extinguisher you are looking close to the floor. I guarantee you no one is looking up for a sign/sticker.
If your boat was on fire and you sent me to the salon for a fire extinguisher I would have every cabinet door open before I tried to find a sticker

The scenario I see in my head is someone is on deck grilling. Grill fire gets out of hand. Hey grab the fire extinguisher in the cabinet in the galley. Ever sent a teenager anywhere to get something? I guarantee you in this case they will find it on first try vs looking in every cabinet. Best case scenario they’ve already grabbed it because it’s muscle memory from seeing a sticker. I’m not putting my family in death trap. To me seconds count and it’s my job to keep them safe. I think a couple of 2.75” stickers on a couple cabinet doors won’t clash too much with the other priceless tchotchkes onboard.

Hell my shifters and throttle are identical but I can tell anyone to pull pull back on the throttles because they are labeled.

There's one in the hanging locker in every stateroom, one under the sink in the galley, one in the locker in the cockpit, and one on the bridge. More than the minimum required.
It would be hard not to find an extinguisher when needed.
But when we do extended trips where aid is hours away there is a session with all of us to go over safety, preparation, and what to do IF.

In addition to a safety briefing indicating where fire extinguishers are located, life jackets, the mandetory how to use the head and what not to flush talk, I've added the following line: Without judgement, if you have any weed or canabis materials in your possession, please go and put them back in your car. I'll wait.
