Saved, planned, got a boat- then got fired.

...I contacted the seller/was contacted, and completed the sale after the auction ended but did not meet the reserve.

That's how I got my current boat. Bid on eBay, Reserve wasn't met, contacted the seller and made an offer (under Reserve and NADA value). Presto! New (to me) boat!

Thanks all- yes, that's my boat on the bay. had a TON of emails, several people say they wanted it, several more low ball offers. I set the reserve at 56k, which I feel is more then fair. The trailer is available for another $2500 to the buyer.
I'd like to sell it but by no means will it be the "2nd happiest day of ownership". My daughter just does not understand why I'd sell "our big boat". I will keep it before I sell it for a penny less then the $56k. Maybe we won't use it until I get another job but I'm not giving it away either.

Thanks a ton for the thoughts/ prayers/ etc. We will be fine!

I hope it works out for you. Owning a boat can be tough. I'm learning that with my first one right now. Ebay is a great tool even if you never buy or sell anything through the site. Best wishes!

I hate that this happened to you. Even the best laid plans go awry. If it take selling the boat to sustain the Fam then thats what you need to do. Best of luck to you in your search for employment. Sounds like you have marketable skills and abilities.

Well.... Thought I'd update this post. The boat sold straight away- it was easy. Turned out I did'nt need to sell the boat as I landed on my feet 1 month after the layoff (wish I would have relaxed a bit during that time!). Took my "boat money" and picked up a race car (a hobby I've had for 15yrs) and yesterday picked up another Searay. It's no 260, instead an old 200 open bow that needs some tlc. But it's paid for, and we'll be on the water. I'll post pics in a couple days but here is the car:

That's good news! :smt038

I can see we share the same passion for driving!

Are you going to race your new car or just to do track days?

Definately race. Already won one national and finished 2nd in two others.

It's a fun hobby but with the new gig it's tough go often due to the time away- maybe 4-5 races a year. I'm really excited about the boat and getting her prepped for use. Picking it up Tuesday! The risers are cracked so I will be replacing them, plus a few other items.

You may enjoy the little 200 more since you are the true owner and not the bank. I'd rather own old junk than pay to use someone else's new stuff. My 0.02 worth.

Nice looking car bought a boat we could pay cash for mooring, maintenance and insurance is enough without payments.
