Yesterday while helping a friend move his newly purchased Hatteras MY south to our home port we experienced an engine fire that ultimately had to be extinguished with the halon system. I am sure we would have ended up in the water watching the boat burn had his 30 year old system failed to operate.
With fire safety now at the top of my mind I have tried to find the manual for the Sea-Fire system installed on my 1998 Sedan Bridge. The Hatteras had an actual handle to pull to activate the system and all I can see on my bridge is the round remote with an auto/override switch.
I understand the system is supposed to activate based on temperature but I want to have the option to do it manually. Based on what I experienced yesterday the fire was at the back of the starboard engine and his tank was on the forward bulkhead. If we had waited for the fire to spread the results could have been deadly.
Will simply moving the switch to override activate the extinguisher?
Needless to say I will have my entire system inspected and have already ordered many additional safety devices that could have aided in early detection like an engine room camera and FireBoy smoke detector that is safe for the engine room.
