Hi Folks

Stumbled across your forum while searching for info. I have purchased a 2006 Sea Ray 195 Sprt with 4.3 MPI and what I think is a bravo 1 engine. History of the boat is that it sat on a canal in the states for a year unused then was shipped to here in Oz were it has sat for 2 years more. I get the boat tomorrow.

I have now got my hands on it and have my work cut out for me so may have a few questions. Any suggestions for what work I shoud do first will be most welcome. I have not run the boat but turned it over to ensure it was not seized.

First Question - I was orgininally told it had a alpha 1 on it but now he thinks its a bravo. As the drive was sitting in water I'm thnking it would need a rebuild )it turns with no issues)so have started looking for a second hand one. I have found a really good alpha 1 gen 2 at a great price with every thing (including a 3lt merc). If i do find it is a bravo what on the sea ray, is it a big issue changing to the alpha? Assuming I have everything inside and outside from the donor unit, will i need to but anything further. Will the transome hole be a problem.

Appreciate any resonse.

I doubt very seriously with a 4.3 that you have a bravo drive. More than likely you have an alpha drive. Whichever you finally figure out you have you do not want to go changing from one to the other. The holes are different. It requires an entire overhaul of the transom and drive train. I.E. changing transom assemblies, gears, bearings and everything else that goes through the hull.
Secondly, your assuming that the drive is bad? I would drain the gear oil from the drive. Look for water or metal in the oil. If it still has gear oil in it its worth trying.
If you still have doubts pull the inspection plate on the top of the drive. Check the gears for wear or damage. I believe its just 4 bolts.

hi mate

thanks for you response. got the boat today and checked the serial number on the mercury website. number is ow926821. this bought up a bravo 3?? assuming i got the search right does this seem odd?

the current one is free and turns fine. was sitting in water so needs cleaned and painted. what seals or bearings should i do for insurance. i will change the oil as a minimum.

If it is a Bravo 3 it will have dual counter rotating propellers. If it has been sitting this long drain the fuel tank. Change the filters for fuel, oil. Change the oil in the motor and drive. Make sure it isnt milky. Pull the spark plugs and look for evidence of rust in the cylinders. If so it might be a good idea to squirt a shot of motor oil in each cylinder. Find the grease fittings and lubricate. Make sure you do all the maintenance before you try to run it.

Who knows what you have but I didn't think the bravo 3 was an option on the 195 in 2006. Maybe if you can post a picture of the drive. And your new boat for that matter.

Blaster, you were correct. Finally got the boat and checked the numbers again and it is an alpha. Picked up a alpha drive with only 4 hours for a steel so will replace the whole leg. Will pull the manifolds off this weekend and see what they look like.Mayy pressure test and see how they go.

Trying to look at new ones from the US. Much cheaper but it seems they wont send Merc parts to Oz due to licensing. Bit of shame.
Does anyone have any ideas on aftermarket for the 4.3L? Any suppliers that will ship OS?

Thanks
