Sea Ray 230da

thanks for the welcome. and yes the hatch has pretty much had it. the lever is gone and the hatch cover itself is cracked. it kinda sucks when were cruising along in lake erie when the waves are up and the hatch slams back open on the deck lol. do you know anywhere i can get a replacement/ or at least the handle i could plastiweld the hatch if i really had no other choice.

also being this is my first boat i have to ask the newbie question. how does the icebox work? we stayed over on the boat the other night. and put a bag of ice in it. and hours later it was leaking water on the floor. maybe im missing parts or just an idiot. but all that was inside when i bought the boat was a shelf close to the top and a hose coming out of the bottom. any explanation of the formentionted device would be appriciated. (please keep the laughter to a minimum)

Some of the locals may know about a latch? The previous owner had replaced my hatch perspex and used a generic stainless latch.
With regards to the icebox? If this is the one in the fridge and the same as mine, Engel? you'll have to have the fridge set on maximum cold to have a hope of keeping a bag of ice frozen... which will chew through your batteries.

dstein8357. Welcome aboard the 230 forum. I've got a '93 230, so we have a lot in common. As to your questions 1) I'm not sure what the "cockpit bolster" is??? 2) The anchor hatch must have been a poor design somehow, I had to bungee the hatch down to the inside of the anchor storage..forgot once...at about 21 mph...wham bent the frame, cracked the hatch. . I'm using plastic/resin material from a place that makes outdoor signs. Usually they come in a few thickness' and it's pretty close to the same color/tint to the original...fairly cheap too. I simply put an "eye" bolt thru the hatch, used a washer and bolt on the exterior of the hatch, so I could tie down the hatch from inside. Gotta go forward to clear the achor anyhow, just release the bungee. I couldn't find the original hatch latch, so had to make due..works great though. K-mart 4 1/2 x 6 carpet $12, washable, looks good, cheap to replace, fits the rear area perfect. Dry in the morning too, 'cause you can put it below when over-nighting or leaving out overnight, too much getting in and out of the water to make snap down carpet practical. welcome! JA

dstein. Forgot question about Icebox. 4) yes, ice box works great....to store cups, crackers, chips....... :) JA

lol yeah thats pretty much what its used for now. just put the liquor bottles in there lol

thanks for the info the cockbit bolster is the two peices in the rear of the cockpit that are the two upolstered pieces just above the transom. one of them is missing its support.

Hey guys,

update on my 230, I just got done putting a new water pump in outdrive and it is drying now from the new coat of primer, paint, and clearcoat I applied to it. Will be installing new gimbal bearing and freshly painted outdrive tomorrow. I'be been working all day on the boat tending to little things. Have to replace the exhaust riser bolts and gaskets because I inspected the manifolds (which are good, whew!). Had to inspect things like the speedo which I found bad and cant seem to find replacement parts so I will plug with a small screw and use 3m marine sealant. I have a gps anyway so I dont really need the speedo. I am awaiting the exhaust elbows and then I will be installing alternator and power steering pump after i go to junk yard and find some crankshaft pulley bolts and main crank bolt. It just a bunch of little things now. I was able to score some tires for the trailer for $125. Awaiting a new coupler which will be here in a couple of days then I have to fix brakes on trailer. Hopefully I will have in the water in the next couple weeks. I want to try and get it done before we move so I dont have to worry about boat while moving. I'm glad reaction to this thread is good and I will post some pics of my progress tomorrow.

Sounds like you have been busy! I'm at the held up stage. Trailer and boat are sitting in my driveway on axle stands.... Hope there's no more earthquakes as it looks quite dodgy! Axles and spring mounts are away at galvanizers and won't be ready for another week. Just spent the day under the trailer touching up small rusty spots.
Look forward to seeing your pics.

sounds like you got your hands full for sure. im on hold as well since there calling for rain and low temps most of the weekend here in detroit. i guess i could install the new radio and speakers that i bought this season but i might just delve into the world of U of M football instead. looking forward to your progress pics

Well 1 step forward and 2 steps back, Got the outdrive installed, exhaust risers and elbows installed. Fixed the shifting cable that goes to the outdrive (it was frozen, unfroze lubed and reinstalled, no corrosion or cable damage of any kind so I called it good) started to try and shift into gear from the throttle control and seen the cable wasnt working. I took off the access panel from underneath and removed the throttle control assembly. Cable was intact. Removed the whole contral assembly from boat and put on my office desk where the air conditioning was. Took it apart and found the cam broken in half that puts the control into throttle only of shifting mode. So if any of you know where I can get a throttle control for reasonable let me know, otherwise fleabay. Good news, once I get this throttle control replaced I should only have 1 more day of work then she'll be ready for water. I took a few pics but spent most of the time in the engine bay and underneath in the bunk but here are some pics of the outdrive before and after.

update to the update. Just looked on ebay and found a throttle control that had 20 seconds left in the auction, I bid and got it for $163. It was the identical throttle control so I felt it was a good deal. I gotta keep this big ball rolling so I dont loose interest lol

Looks fantastic and good news on the control! How did you get that leg hangin way up there?
I have spent the last two days flat out. Galvanizers got my bits finished earlier than expected so thought I'd share a few photos also.
Tomorrows job is to replace all the copper brake lines as the rear needed extending thanks to the new rocker in the middle of the springs.
The rotors are stainless steel and cost a whole heap of money. Hopefully I will never have to visit them with my wallet again!
The first photo is the old superseded set I used to run. The rotors were so corroded and thin I wore out a complete set of pads with only 4 trips north.
Anyway feel quite stink as all this and it won't make my boat go any better.

Cheers for now Mike.

Well all has gone quiet on the 230 thread? I've been working 10 hour days this week and had my first day off today. Got the trailer assembled and fitted my new Lowrance fuel flow meter and gauge. The gauge is multi function and not the easiest to navigate through. I'm sure I'll get used to it.
I'll do some testing tomorro.
Cheers for now, Mike.

Hey annie, hope all is well. We are still having great boating weather here, ran all over the lake yesterday, burned fuel like I could afford it. I noticed you are re-buliding your trailer, I had to put new bunks on my trailer 2 weeks ago, went real well. I looked at carpet for the bunks, but had to buy about a 12 x 12 piece, and only needed about a 24 inch width. I went to home depot and bought an outdoor carpet "runner". It was 26 inches wide, so I split it down the middle and only had to buy an 11 foot length. I think it was about $2 per foot, so total cost was around $22. No waste at all. The carpet was a really solid indoor/outdoor and had an excellent rubber backing. Worked like a charm. I'm a month away from a year-end clean up, and winterizing. JA

Hey Guys,

Hope you are still getting some good weather. It's starting to warm up down here. I've got 1 more week of work and then have 10 days on Annie in the Marlborough sounds .... Quite excited to say the least.
LM230.... great news on the bunks, I wish my fix was that cheap. Unfortunately it cost about 3k but as i said it's fixed properly and tows like a dream.
I got out for a quick squirt last weekend and gave the fuel flow gauge a work out. The V6 uses 30 liters an hour at 3750 rpm which for you imperial guys is about 7.5 gal/hour at 25 mph.
I was quite rapt with that.... Works out at $61/hour in NZD.
I would be interested in seeing what your 5.7's use?
I posted this graph in Lowrance fuel flow sensors but will add it again. You can see how uneconomical it is getting on the plane 2000-3400 rpm and then again above 4200.
Anyways hope all is well and you still like boating.

Cheers Mike

Hey fellow 230 owners, I see its been quite for awhile and from myself, I apologize. We recently had to evict our tenants for not paying rent and decided to move back in the house. We have been steadily working on our house to the point I have literally no time for anything else. Our tenants not only decided to live for the past 2 months rent free, but also left us over 4,000 lbs of trash, flea invested carpet, holes in every door, and holes in walls and sinks. The wife and I have decided to take our time rebuilding and remodeling the house the way we want it so we will be living in our 5th wheel rv for the next few months. My boat has unfortunately taken a back seat for now until the house gets done. I will be working on it every now and then to clear my head from the house and make sure it is ready for next boating season. Now that I have settled in, I will be checking in on a regular basis and hopefully we all can share ideas on projects we have done and want for the future. Hope all is well with everyone and keep in touch.

Derek

Hey Derek, sorry to hear about your house. We get scumbags here doing the same things. It's hard to believe some people could want to live this way.
I had 10 glorious days on Annie with the family a couple of weeks back. All went perfectly.... Well apart from 1 docking mishap but no damage done. Why does it always turn to custard while you have an audience? Lol.
Summer just around the corner for us so looking forward to a good season hopefully.
I was just reading the " Honda generator" thread. Crikey talk about a sh!t fight. Think I'll leave them to that one.
Take care and hope you get the house sorted quick so you can get back on the tools :)

Mike,

I'm totally jealous! 10 days on your boat sounds awesome.

I just read the Generator post and all I can say is HOLY DRAMA! I live in a house (RV) full of women and don't think I have ever encountered that much craziness LOL. I think I'll just keep my conversations to this topic for fear of name calling and intelligence bashing.

I do plan on working on the boat in the next couple of weeks so I'll post pics whenever I can. If you have any pics of your 10 day vacation, post em.

Now I have to go scare my little girls who are playing in thier newly painted and carpeted rooms and practicing thier cartwheels! I'm such a mean Dad! Cheers

Derek

Derek,

I don't want to make you more jealous so I'll only post a couple.

The boat tied up alongside is my parents Bayliner and the maroon Maxum is my older brothers. I think our family are all Americans born in the wrong country. lol (we all own American boats).

The marina picture is Waikawa marina. $22 NZD/ night. It's great for the kids as they can stretch their legs and not get cabin fever. My parents docked opposite so we had baby sitters! As it was spring and still cold at night, staying in the marina lets us boat early in the season using heaters. I'm sure we are all mad. We get nice calm weather here prior to and after summer so it makes for some stunning days.

We went to the outer sounds and got 120 scallops.... Family of 11 ate the whole lot in one sitting!

I spent 2 days working on my parents boat. Changed the exhausts, descaled the heat exchanger, changed all the zincs, replaced the impeller and the stinking thing still overheats! Work in progress that one, I think it has shellfish growing in the leg.

Anyway thats enough of a rant from me.

Take care, Mike.
