Down in Knoxville for a few days. My daughter is rowing in the US Nationals this weekend. Headed over to the SR Knoxville plant for a tour later today. Looking forward to seeing the operation. Will be visiting the Mastercraft plant as well. Looking forward to contrasting the two. Updates to follow.

Cheers.

great tour
and a gift shop at the end of it
FYI...make an appointment for the tour if you havent yet
they are under DOJ regulations at the gate and will turn you away
the only way the admiral and I got in was ask the gate guard to contact the plant manager
and mentioned we were members of the SROC...then welcomed with open arms.

We have a reservation.

Chuck
EXCELLENT
you WILL enjoy the tour
we spent about 3 hours seeing all phases of the manufacture
the cabinet shop and upholstry area were amazing

Chuck,
What boat is she in?
My oldest just back from Queens U for the Summer. He has a seat in the 4 & the 8.
Great sport/lifestyle for anyone. Can be very addictive.

In the 8. Yes it is the ultimate team sport, unlike any other.

The plant tours were great. Very similar processes between these two manufacturers. However some distinct differences too.
Pretty weird to see Bayliners made right alongside SRs. Once we got to the end of the line and saw a finished boat we got to hop onboard and inspect her.
My little one was with us, he was mesmorized the whole way through.
When done we stopped at the gift shop and had to pick up some gear... In the end its pretty cool to have a first hand look at how our little lady came together.

I got a couple of hats and a Tshirt I had never seen anywhere else
did you get to see the mold prep area ??
one thing I found interesting was that the only thing they farmed out glass wise was the radar arch
everything else was done in house

Sounds like you had a great time, Nice tour. Quick question, Do they still use wood in the transom & stringers? I assume so but just thought I would check.

How big of boat did you see comming together?

All transoms yes. Stringers in 28s and down are composite. 30s and up are wood.

We saw all sizes they build which are 240DAs to 370DAs. Got up inside a 310.

How do you/who do you call to get a reservation set up for a tour? The Vonore plant (where the previous boat - 210 Sel) is only about 30-45 minutes away from Knoxville as well.

Go to the searay owners club site and there is a link to submit a request.
