Nevermind!! I deleted this thread and have discovered that is was the lower shift cable that gave up the ghost!

Is there a way to delete this??

No but we will just ignore it.
Be aware, 2 years from now somebody will answer with a long post diagnosing everything you ever wanted to know about shift interrupters.

I've done the conversion to the new shift assembly.
Also saw a YouTube video on how to change the cable and bellows without removing toe drive , looks like a good way to do it.

I did see the new assembly, but my switch works REALLY well. LOL!! The cable is shot since you can't pull it into or out of forward or reverse with the cable in your hand while standing in the bilge and somebody is spinning the prop. It's been 17 years since I replaced this one. Seems like the other one is even older, but maybe I have that backwards? I know the mechanic replaced one right after I got it and I don't have any notes which one. I've had the boat for 18 years. Wow, I think the only thing I've had longer is my truck? I also found out that many of repair places around here won't work on anything older than 30 years. I guess there are enough newer boats they don't have to wrestle with these old barges! I guess they'll miss a repower with crate engines! Too bad, that would be a huge revenue event! I'll dive into the repair next week I guess. I'm not in a hurry because we can't use it for two weeks anyway. Actually that might be a month!

I can't fathom how you can replace the shift cable and bellows without removing the drive? I know you can cut it and pull the inner cable out and send up the new cable. Then remove the outer cable and send it up from below. Seems like that saves a few trips in and out of the boat if I understand it right. My knees would love that! Send me that link if you have it, I'd love to check it out!

you have to remove the drive, go to you tube, great video . search S E I lower shift cable replacement. I do mine every 5 years no matter what. i had 1 break on the water and thanks to seatow no bill but a waisted weekend. FYI, don't buy the especial tool to unscrew cable from housing. get a deep spark plug socket that fits it and use another deep socket over it. will save you $50 on a tool that you will use once

The socket was a whopping $11.00 and I'll use it twice this season alone. Down the road, 10 to 12 years from now, I'll use it when I redo the lower shift cables again! The starboard was done in 2007 or 2008. It's time to do both now anyway since I have no idea when the port was replaced. I have only owned it since 2007 and I have nothing to do Mon-Fri! It doesn't look bad, but I don't have any help so it might test these old knees getting in and out a few times!

The biggest pain in the ass is getting the drive off and back on. Should take less then 2 hours to do entire job

I have to replace the lower seal on the water pump housing, so it's coming off anyway. Two hours isn't that bad. But singlehandedly, it might take a lot longer. It will be indoors and 70 degrees instead of outside in the high 90's or low 100's. That makes is a lot easier! Thanks for the estimate! I'll plan on that for the port side when I get to it this fall.
