It was 1000 I read in the original merc manual it should be 500-650...things seem a lot better now

Yeah, that’ll do it.
About 600 -650 in forward gear should be good.
Sometimes people raise the idle to “solve” rough idle situations.

I new to this forum
so I am also wandering if this old 1968 srv 185 has the rubber impellors and boats do. IU am afraid to take apart and look at stuff without knowing parts numbers. My original manual doesn't say anything about them or have them listed in parts list\. I think I know where they should be on new styles or most merc engines and outdrives. Just not even sure where to find info, been looking at alot of things

I had same prob when I bought boat in May, was slamming in gear. Turned down idle to spec 650, solved problem.

good to hear this may solve my issue. waiting for reservoirs to fill so I can go out. Brought boat home hooed to ear muffs to tinker with and now we are back to 20 ish degrees at night here in Indiana lol, was 70 last Saturday this morning was 29.
