My boat wasn't going into forward gear. The marina mechanic came down & pulled on the lower shift cable that goes from the engine to the outdrive and the boat went into gear both forward & reverse with no problem. So the good news is it's not the gears or the coupler. The bad news I'll need to replace the shifter cable. He tried making shifter cable adjustments but we still couldnt get it to react correctly when shifting into gear from the throttle. They won't be able to get the boat out to do the work for a few days and the 4th of July is in 2 days. Heres my question:
Does anyone know of a temporary way to fix this for one outing so I can enjoy the 4th? I know I can manually shift gears by pulling on the cable. What I'm wondering is if the cable is stretched, can you take the end off and cut some of the cable off to shorten it a bit? Or are there are there any other adjustments that can be made to the upper side that connects to the throttle? Just trying to use the boat on the 4th before since they cant fix it by then. Thanks

Usually the inner cable cuts into the casing so it needs a longer throw to shift. Have you tried to adjust it ?
It's not that difficult a job to adjust or replace. Maybe cutting some off would work, never tried it
