Ships Struggling in Rough Weather

Great pictures - glad none of my cruises have turned into that! Really makes me want to take an open bow over to the Bahamas or something....:smt043:smt043

Just my thoughts .... "can I take my Sun Deck to the Bahamas? ...

"Oh Lord the sea is so big and my boat is so small ..."

Many of these photos had seas running 200ft from trough to crest. Scary. And one will notice that these commercial vessels were all heavily laden and lacked bouyancy necessary to lift the vessel over the wave crests. The ships were washed over.

It is instructive to the recreational mariner to make sure that when venturing out into open sea over to not be over loaded. It's much better to buy the beer and canned peas on the other end than carry a 1,000 pounds of dead weight at the cost of reserve bouyancy.

I'll bet some of those skippers and crew had interesting days when those shots were taken.

The last frame of the sailboat .... odds are he was dismasted when the crest passed under his keel leaving him crashing airborne into the trough ...

I wonder what "point" he was trying to get around. It looked like one of the freighter photos may have been taken from land getting around the same point.

Chad: What makes you think the sailboat would have been demasted other than the obvious; "They ain't made to fall like that".
