Hi guys ,working on the out drives today, time to put props back on but would like to clean them first. They look in good shape not bent or any chunks missing but looks like previous owner never touch them. Years of barnicles and muk. Was wondering if I could put them in a vice and use a fine wire wheel, is there any thing I should watch for, or be cautious of . They are the mercury vengence ss props. Thanks guys. Tony

I used to use scotch brite buffing pads in a die grinder on mine. As long as you're not removing metal, you're fine.

Plus one on the muratic acid. If you don't have any of this you can soak it overnight in something like CLR or even plain vinegar. Won't work as well as the muratic acid. This way it even gets the inside or the prop clean.

Two thoughts. Consider having them prop scanned. They may not be as in shape as they appear. If you go the DIY route, be careful to not get acid on any rubber parts.

Good luck!

I can agree 100% on the above.

Sent my 2 pairs to PropMD in Minnesota (google them, great outfit) under $400 for both pairs to be tuned and cleaned up. They were 1998 and never touched since then. They were about an inch from proper pitch.

If you choose to just clean, try 'the works' toilet bowl cleaner. Works great...

Don't forget to remove the hub before using cleaning chemicals.

Be sure to grease the prop shaft when you reinstall as well.
