I have a 2008 330 sundancer with 496 inboards. i got an alarm that says. ENG1 ,engine power limited engine guardian is active.power will be limited to prevent engine damage

any idea what this could be?? thanks

Guardian mode is lock down when something serious is up. Could be lack of oil pressure, over temp, low voltage, plus a few others. All gauges show normal? Have smartcraft screen?

IAC valve may be the problem. You may want to search the strings for this.

Iac valve will do 2 beeps every 60 seconds, but will not do continuous beep and guardian mode. Only a handful of critical items can do that.

my first thought would be raw water pressure /overheating. There is a version of those sensors notorious for being faulty. Can you describe what you were doing when the alarm sounded and it went into guardian mode?

it came on a week earlier during a 20 min run.I just canceled it and it went away. This weekend as soon as i went over 1200 rpm it went off . It kept coming on. It then shut down the engine. i left it off. Next morning it started up fine then shut right off without alarm sounding.

Go to the alarm history section and see what code or message is displaying...should tell you why it triggered the limited power feature.

Second this thought -
Sounds like water pressure below acceptable level
Guardian will keep you between 1000 and 1250 rpms even if temps are normal .
Don't ask me how I know !

mechanic says i may have a bad cylinder? has not done a compression check yet.. boat got little use for a few years.its a 2008 496 inboard/153 hrs. hes says pos a bad injector, bad cool pack, stuck ring? I dont know what to believe . any advice?? thanks. any idea if i have to pull the motor ballpark price to repair??

AS the guys above have said, I would search the alarm history first and even then I would ask for a diagnostic before committing this to be a cylinder problem - the raw water pressure sensor failure is very common and because the smartcraft thinks there is no cooling taking place - it shuts the engine down into guardian mode to protect the engine from major damage - if it is this it is a $100 part that is changed in 10 minutes once you know where it is - search here for many threads and pictures on that particular problem.

As a minimum get a mechanic to run a diagnostic and talk you through the fault screens, ask him to check fault history to see what preceded guardian mode - get him to show you this. I would do that before committing even to a compression test frankly.

When you say raw water. Mine is closed cooling. Does it matter? Sorry i am not a mecanic.

I am afraid not familiar with your particular setup but someone here will explain what temperature or pressure sensors trigger Guardian mode on your model with closed cooling - if not a raw water sensor it could be some other system health sensor that has failed to cause this.

One thing is certain though - whatever setup you have - guardian mode (which limits the revs or shuts down the engine) will have been preceded by the root cause fault which a diagnostic will direct you to.

Yes, closed system still has a raw water side, and the sea water pressure switch that has known issues and puts the engine in guardian mode. As others have said, get the alarm history for review. Also, bring up water pressure on your smartcraft system and read the pressure.

I I am not buying the mechanics thoughts just yet.

It can when it has fried the channel to the ECM, I'm my case, it gave an overspeed warning and put the engine in guardian mode. That being said, the IAC fail message came first, with the destruction of the ECM shortly thereafter.

it runs but you can smell unused fuel in the exhaust. you can feel a little vibration. mechanic said he took it out and now alarm beeps but no shut down.

Alarms went from 2 beeps every min to a week later to steady beep. Then it automatically shut down the engine. it re started fine in the morning the shut itself down in about a minute. i live in Annapolis MD I think I have a good mechanic but does anyone recommend a good sea ray mechanic in the area?

My neighbor at the marina just ( this past week) had the exact same problem. The sensor was faulty and failed. He changed the sensor and the problem was solved. It's an easy fix according to him. I'd change the sensor BEFORE letting the mechanic do anything. Good luck.
