So Are We Ready to Decouple from China Now?!

Gas at $150/barrel. We couldn't afford to drive to the store to get the TV. That was $4.50-5 a gallon territory right? M

at 1/2 - 1 MPG on a downhill day, I'll vote for an oil surplus. I can put up with a lot, but when fuel for the babies gets to $4-$10 per gal, I have to do it a lot less, and that makes me a grumpy person.....

Boater problems right there.

Actually low gas prices will give us plenty of cash to buy a TV, even at a 20% price increase.

Some of the items we purchase from China directly effect manufacturing. One of the manufacturers I deal with uses special polymers for their products. This type of polymer is used in many products throughout the US. Problem is, because of our strict environmental guidelines, we can't manufacture those raw polymers in the US. However, we can buy them, bring them here and then add them to the final manufacturing process of the product. So, guess where we buy them?

Time to fix that now.

Agreed. Manufacturers have been keeping an eye on total cost from China for a number of years now. But the real action started (if you're a USA-based manufacturer) with the tariff escalation that began in 2018. The real kicker (unintended consequence?) of the tariff war with China was that it forced some (many?) manufacturers to increase their local production within China. Counter-tariffs were/are a real problem from USA based manufacturers that sell substantially back into China.

Like Trump or hate Trump, the tariff policies created under his administration targeting China will make for one hell of a thesis on foreign policy when the dust settles. For those that wanted to understand the intent, and not the media version of it, you'd find it was to stop the theft of intellectual property and technology. It wasn't just a money grab...
Yes but there was also a tit for tat element to get a stable long term plan in place for our farmers.

Not quite - The reason much of our critical needs here in the US are manufactured outside of the US is our domestic manufacturing capability is crippled due to the cost of doing business here.
Unions contributed greatly to help off shore manufacturing and assembly... work ethic on top of that increased cost even more.

We have the most productive workers in the world, 58% of manufacturing jobs lost since NAFTA were directly attributed to automation, not cheap labor on the other side of the border...

I have been in production machining and assembly for 30 years.... I have lost work and sourced work to Mexico, India and China. It was all labor and not automation.
I am sure you are referring to some other commodity..

To a little-informed consumer, like me, it would seem a great opportunity for some our brothers to the south to take advantage of the production slippage in Asia and highlight the potential of moving production to places like Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, etc.

Instead of having most of our auto parts, electronics, chemicals, made in Asia, the government’s from South America should be ringing Trump’s phone up and down.

If you take an automated cell creating 50,000pcs/yr.. the cell is approx $800k and you put one in China and one in the USA of approx the same size company. The absolute best you can do is come within 10% in piece price.I have done the comparison countless times.... the customer will take the 10% from China every time

Trump may be right about this publicly, but his and his family make their clothing products over seas. If you want to talk the talk, he should walk the walk and bring those jobs home too
As a US manufacturer, it doesn’t work that way. Somethings you can’t even find here. And you have to keep up with the joneses.

Sometimes. I was able to win work back because they were moving assembly to Mexico. I convinced them being in the same time zone was a bonus.

China's total disrespect for the environment also gives them a leg up on the price to manufacture something . Their air quality sucks because of it and their building coal burning power plant as quick as they can.

I do most of my own auto, boat, and home projects myself. Within the last couple of years, I have been so frustrated by the crap quality of tools and parts from China, I specifically look for USA, Japanese, or Mexican built items. Very hard to find. Even Moog wheel hubs, supposed to be some of the best, I discovered (I think) have bearings built in China.
I truly believe the sellers/manufacturers are trying to hide the true source of the products. Very difficult to source ID.
I gladly pay the 10% premium for stuff I know is US made simply to save me the time of returning the garbage that won’t fit, doesn’t seat properly, cracked flanges, leaking lines, etc.

Thataboy Chris380 tell them like it is...….Some will NOT want to hear it, god bless you brother for telling the hard truth
