Has anyone attempted to make a water softener? Saw an add in boating and it looks like large PCV tube with caps, resin balls, a few fittings and a filter, all for $350. Am I missing something?

That is all a simple water softner is. You will need a way to back flush it. My Wet Spot (no comments please) is a PVC tube with resin inside and a nipple at each end. There is a trap inside on each end to keep the resin in. Back flushing entails putting water conditioner salt in a similiar PVC tube and running the brine backward through the water softner tube for about 15 minutes.

There are a couple (different manufactures) at our marina (moderate hard water) & both report good results when new but less capacity than advertised. Haven't heard if results returned to "as new" when resin recharged.

Mr Salt...per chance are you in the water conditioning industry?

No, but I used to be in the salt business and one of the big uses for salt is for water conditioning. Salt pulls the hardness off of the resin and flushes it way. The capacity of a water conditioner will degrade as the the resin gets covered, with usally calcium carbonate. The reverse flushing with salt will cause the resin to release the calcium carbonate so the resin will be as good as new. The resin will last a very long time as it does not wear.

Was hoping you owned the salt harvesting operation on Bonaire & needed someone to oversee said business. Maybe 4 hrs a day, Mon, Wed & Fri, company car & dive boat.

I had one in my house years back that used 30 galons water ot backwash cycle recommended for a 2 person dwelling. If you got too kids, then your wasting 60 gallons a week. I would think using Calgon in the wash and drinking bottled water is more ecomical, none the less better for water conservation. Now Florida water, that's another story but in Virginia its pretty good when it arrives from the Susquehanna River.

I built one a number of years ago for about $50 in parts. The hardest thing was finding a source for the resin. The thing worked fine, but after a while I got tired of hauling around with me. It's easier to use a chamois to dry the boat after washing.
