Can an individual purchase computer software or system to show error codes? What is the most economical but effective product to do that? I have 2 mercruiser 350 mag mpi engines, 2007. Thank you

I have a VesselView Mobile (bought it on sale for $175), it’s a Bluetooth device that communicates engine information to your phone with a free app. Not like the rinda device, this is used for RPM, fuel, burn, temps, etc, but will show you error codes when they occur. Last time out, it triggered when my fuel pump relay died, see the message below...15 minutes later, I was back on plane.

…….and what “reader” do they connect with? I have a SimRad GO9 (and, of course, iPhone). Thanks.

It says, “transmitted over your N2K compatible network”. Is that an additional purchase?

Agree completely. They can be read directly by Bluetooth on phone or tablet but are intended to bridge the data to your nmea n2K network to be read by just about any mfd that talks N2K. These are for pre-smartcraft engines with fuel injection. You need to get the gateway that matches your MEFI version.

tons of info through the app (Bluetooth) to your smart phone. If your MFD has NMEA2k you can send basics like rpm, temp, oil pressure(add the sensor), fuel burn(my fav), engine hours etc

Your simrad will connect to nmea2k network. My boat had the network already installed. It’s a universal communication backbone that will send the info from the engines to your screen. If you have a fusion headunit like the ms-770, it can also send info through the nmea2k so you can control the head unit at the simrad mfd…. If you don’t have it installed, figure $100 for it as a ballpark

...so, if using my iPhone, I don't need the NMEA network? Thinking about adding an iPad air where some of the RayMarine stuff is.

....and if wanting to use the SIMRAD screens, I would need to install the NMEA network?

Model year 2000 boat right?
If so you are pre-Smartcraft which is Mercury Marine's data network, and as such do not have the "bones" to obtain vessel/engine data and fault codes through a Mercury Vessel View device nor through a Bluetooth interface. The boat must have a data network in place to install a device to transmit Bluetooth to a Smartphone (for example). If your engines are fuel injected there should be a diagnostic port for connection of service tools.
Is there a device that can interface with the engine ECM and convert ECM diag data to function on a NMEA 2000 network? Not that I know of.

Can you read info on a 2006 5.0 efi with smartcraft without a scan tool. If yess how. I don't have smart craft gauges on my 215 weekender

Yes, I am a 2000 with 7.4 MPI Gen 4 engines. Looks like Fox Marine has the interface but it need a network for it to talk to my SimRad GO9.

…or, It looks like the Fox interface will connect Bluetooth to an iPhone.

Am I correct?

Sorry, Fox calls it an E

Sorry, Fox calls it an Engine Gateway.

There are several others ( @SKybolt or @dtfeld ) that have used the Fox gateway products. They do require a NMEA 2000 network to interface them with your MFD or any other display with a NMEA 2000 port.

Looks that way. But it excels in getting everything engine over to NMEA2000 which can be displayed on any newer chart plotter.

Fault Codes and Messages? The ECM will output a digital code but I'm unaware of an MFD that will decode to a message.

No the regular N2K messages like Low oil pres, high temp etc. will transmit, but not the ECM specific ones.

From their manual:

The data broadcasted on the N2k network is as follows and may vary or have different meanings
depending on the model of ECM and unique manufacturer inputs and settings. Engine # (as determined by DIP switch), Engine RPM, Fuel Flow Rate, Coolant Temperature, Alternator/Battery Voltage, Engine Run Hours, Engine Load, Oil Pressure, and Engine Torque.

Data broadcasted via bluetooth is more extensive and is similar to what would be available to be seen on a dealership diagnostic scanner. Alarm codes can be viewed and cleared using the Fox Marine iOS/Android app.
